*Your POV*
At the top of the staircase, I don't even give myself a moment to catch my breath before my feet are at the door, my hand is on the handle and my body is used to shove it wide open. Squinting my eyes, light breaks through the cracks and smoke and in an instant I am engulfed by the sun's beam.
With blurry yet determined focus, I scanned the roof, desperate to see one face. And when my eyes finally fell onto him, a warmth spread through my stomach and my chest squeezed knowing that he was right in front of me. But that all comes crumbling down when I see that Jeff is indeed there, but he is also limp and tied to a chair. With none other than Liu holding a gun to his head.
"I'd point it at you but we both know your history in making stupid choices." Liu remarked as he glared at me. Yet with a look filled with so much hatred, he remained calm and unmoving. "But seeing what you've done for love, I can only assume this will make you behave."
The roof was a big clearing. There was nothing else up here besides three people and a chair. Nothing up here to fight him with or to take cover. He has a gun, he has Jeff, he has the upper hand. The only thing I have is what I know and the hope that he'll listen to me. Unsure of what to do, my hands go up in defense. Showing him I have nothing, I just pray that he won't decide to just shoot me.
"I just wanna talk Liu..." I take a step forward, just enough to let the door close behind me. Showing him I am not leaving with nothing. Surprisingly he doesn't move an inch. He remains as calm as ever. He's also determined, confident, but he doesn't know the truth.
"I have others do the talking for me if you haven't noticed. You should go find one of them and leave us be." This man is so sassy. Fighting the urge to roll my eyes wasn't hard since I'm scared out of my mind right now. But I also have to remain confident.
All of this was for revenge. They were out for Jeff for something that Liu was convinced was all Jeff's fault. Liu doesn't know that after all this time he was used as a pawn, just like his brother had been. I have to believe that once he realizes the truth, he'll let Jeff go. Or be perplexed long enough for me to push him off the edge.
"Liu, I know you're hurting. Your whole world has been ripped from you and I can understand-"
"What can you understand? You still have your uncle and home. I have nothing." Liu clenched his teeth as he seethed. I wouldn't be so worried if it wasn't for the slightest movement he made in his hand. The same hand that held Jeff at gunpoint. With a churning stomach, I took in a shaky breath. I have to be careful with what I say but with the building being on fire, I need to act fast. But where do I even start? How do I get Liu to listen to me? All he sees is a monster that killed his family and a girl who has-
"Stockholm syndrome..."
"If you start talking to yourself like that people are going to be afraid of you.. I'd know." Tilting his head, his eyes burned into me like acid. However it'd just hit me. He's seen me as collateral damage this entire time. A victim ripped from my reality and dragged into theirs. His world is filled with trauma and mental illness. Of course he would see me this way.
