"Mike, I'm seriously freaking out!" Lily exclaimed, her voice shaking with urgency. Anxiety coursed through her as she paced restlessly, the hardwood floor creaking beneath her hurried steps.
Her hands twisted together nervously, fingers pulling and tugging at each other as if trying to untangle her racing thoughts. "What if I never get to see El again? What if this psychopath actually keeps her locked up, and I can't do anything?" Mike, in stark contrast, lounged lazily across the bed, his body stretched out comfortably with one foot dangling off the edge.
He rested his head back at an angle, watching Lily's frantic movements from an almost comical upside-down perspective. A half-amused smile tugged at the corners of his lips. "You can't be serious," he said in a laid-back, monotone voice, his eyes glinting with a mix of amusement and concern.
"That's pretty ridiculous, bug." He continued to observe her, noting how her frustration was palpable as she huffed grumpily, her fingers tugging at the ends of her tousled brunette hair, each tug reflecting her inner turmoil.
"No, it's not! He's insane!" Lily's eyes widened in disbelief as she abruptly halted her pacing. She shot a scathing look at the tall, dark-haired boy, who seemed unfazed by the gravity of the situation.
"This is my girlfriend we're talking about! If you had one, you'll understan,d" he exclaimed, her voice quivering with raw intensity as she emphasized each word. The frustration bubbled just beneath the surface, radiating off her like heat from a summer pavement, making it clear just how deeply she cared.
"If I can't see her, I swear I'll actually go insane!" She proclaimed, her voice layered with desperation as she exaggerated her expression, her features animated like a character from a play. Her head shook fervently, and her wide gray eyes sparkled with a tempest of emotions, fear, longing, and helplessness.
With a dramatic flourish, she flung herself onto her bed beside Mike, her head sinking into the plush pillow, as if seeking refuge from her agitation. Suddenly, she emerged, pushing the pillow closer with forceful hands, and let out a scream of frustration that echoed off the walls of the room, a raw outburst of pent-up anxiety.
Suddenly, the phone on her bedside began to ring frantically, the sharp sound slicing through the silence and causing the duo to jump in surprise.
"Oh god, Oh god," Lily muttered in a breathless whisper, her heart racing as she sat up abruptly, eyes fixed on the insistent device. The sunlight of the room cast shadows across Mike, and she took a deep, steadying breath before leaning over him, her weight pressing down on his chest as he unintentionally shielded the phone from her reach. Desperation flickered in her gaze as she struggled to maneuver around him, the urgency of the ringing filling the air with tension.
"Hello?" Lily's voice wavered, laced with a hint of nervousness. She cleared her throat, attempting to steady herself. Her eyes betrayed her, twitching ever so slightly, a familiar quirk she had developed since childhood that surfaced whenever she felt anxious or was trying to hide the truth.
