Scott could hear Mitch crying in the other room. In fact, he heard it every night since they separated and he began sleeping in there. Everything was backwards. Mitch should be snuggling inside Scott's embrace, without Scott having to fear for his life. The worst part was, Mitch refused to talk about it. Mitch wouldn't talk about it, and Scott could barely remember it. Even Abe's face was blurry. Scott could recall nothing without a blurry film over it. Of course Mitch was faring worse. Scott had no idea what Mitch sacrificed to keep both of them alive. By how red his skin was after every shower, Scott had a pretty good idea.
Mitch spent every day and every night running away from memories. In the shower he would scrub off layers of his skin, thinking that if he got rid of skin he would get rid of the memory of Abe's touch. But every night he remembered and every shower he tried it again. Scott's back caused him to break down into tears and leave the room. The worst thing for Mitch was that Abe hadn't just hurt him, he'd hurt Scott too, and that may have been the worst injury of all.
Mitch felt like a child that lost their mother in Target. Wandering around life like how the child would wander around the store, looking down aisles but turning away quickly once they realized that the stranger down it wasn't their mother. The only difference? The child in the end finds their mother. Mitch was looking for a mother that doesn't exist. A mother he could never find. Mitch was positive he could never be happy again. There were too many obstacles to get over and he was too tired of chasing it. He was exhausted. He couldn't run from the memories much longer. But he couldn't live with them either. He was just so tired. So unbelievably tired. So unbelievably tired of living a life he no longer felt comfortable in. He wished he were a snake, so he could just shed it and start anew.
