Chapter 11

Alice's P.O.V

May 15, 1970

It's been a whole week. Maude and Albert were getting ready to leave. Linda and Joseph decided to stay one more day. Albert was waiting for Maude and Lillian at the door with all their bags.

"Thanks for having us" Albert said

"It was our pleasure" I said

"You two are welcome to stay with us anytime. Just give us a call" Paul said. Maude joined us holding Lillian's hand. Lillian was sniffling.

"Lillian, are you alright?" I asked. Lillian just nodded.

"She's just upset about leaving Ethel" Maude said. I got down to Lillian's level. Paul did the same.

"It's not like you're saying goodbye forever to her" I said

"You can come see her and we can have you for a couple nights if it's okay with your parents" Paul said

"Yeah. We're also just a phone call away" I said. Lillian smiled at us and hugged us.

"Okay, we should get going" Albert said. Lillian let go of us and walked over to her mom and dad. Paul and I stood up, grabbing each other's hands.

"We'll talk to you guys soon. Maybe we'll come out for Christmas" Maude said

"We'd like that" I said. The family of three waves goodbye and then left. Paul and I were now left alone. He immediately pressed his lips to mine.

"Where's the kids?" Paul asked

"I think they're with Helen" I said

"Where's Linda and Joseph?" Paul asked

"They've been in their room all day. Why?" I said.

"Just making sure we're alone" Paul said. He kissed me again and started playing with the hem of my shirt. Paul was about to pull my shirt off my head when we were interrupted by Heather and Ethel.

"Mommy! Daddy!" Ethel said

"Auntie! Uncle!" Heather said. Paul and I pulled away from each other and looked at the girls.

"Yes girls?" I said

"Can we go see the horses?" Heather asked

"I suppose so" Paul said

"Yay!" the girls cheered.

"Paul, can you take the girls out there? I just need to find Helen for and talk to her for a quick moment" I said

"Sure thing, love" Paul said. He and the girls made their way outside. I went to go find Helen to let her know that we were going to be with the horses. As I went to go find Helen, I walked past Linda and Joseph's room. Their door was closed and I could hear moaning coming from inside.

"So that's what you two were doing all this time" I mumbled to myself. I ignored them and went to find Helen. I found her in the kids room, sleeping on the floor with Alex and Josie using her as a pillow. Mary, on the other hand, was wide awake and standing on her bed.

"Hey baby girl" I said. I walked over to her and picked her up.

"Let's go see daddy and your sisters" I said. I walked out of the room with Mary. I walked by just in time to hear a loud moan come from Linda.

"Oh, Joseph!" she moaned. Mary confusingly looked at the door and looked back to me.

"You don't need to know. Not until you're a teenager and bringing boys home" I said.

When I got to the barn, I saw Paul and the girls feeding the horses.

"The horses are pretty!" Heather said

"That's why we got them. I got Chester and Chocolate as a gift for Auntie" Paul said. I smiled and watched as Paul and Heather conversed with one another while Ethel was a little pre-occupied with Chocolate.

"Did you get the farm for Auntie as well?" Heather asked

"I did" Paul said

"How much do you love Auntie?" Heather asked

"I love her very much. I've been in love with her since the moment I met her" Paul said

"How did you and Auntie meet?" Heather asked

"We ran into each other on the street. I thought she was really beautiful and I still think she is" Paul said

"Mommy says that daddy used to be married to Auntie" Heather said

"She was. Your daddy is Ethel's daddy. You both share the same dad" Paul said

"Is that why we're sisters?" Heather asked

"Yeah. You're Ethel's step-sister" Paul said

"Mommy says that daddy is my step-daddy because I have another daddy. I have two of them, just like Ethel does" Heather said

"That's right. We both love her very much just like both of your daddy's love you very much" Paul said

"Does Ethel know that she has two daddy's?" Heather asked

"Not yet. We want to tell her soon but until we do, you have to keep it a secret, okay?" Paul said

"Okay Uncle Paul" Heather said. Heather then went back over to Ethel. Paul took notice of me and walked over to me.

"There's my beautiful wife and my beautiful daughter" Paul said. He took Mary and held her in his arms.

"That was a very interesting conversation you had with Heather" I said

"I know" Paul said

"I didn't even know Heather knew she has two daddy's. I figured that Joseph became her father at a young enough age, that she would think Joseph is her father" I said

"Much how Ethel thinks I am?" Paul said

"Well she is your daughter, just not your biological daughter" I said

"I still love her with all my heart" Paul said

"I know you do and she loves you. She is a daddy's girl after all" I said, placing my hand on Paul's shoulder. I was silent for a moment.

"Is something wrong, love?" Paul asked

"We have to tell Ethel at some point. I just don't know when or how we would do it" I said

"We will. We'll know when it's the right time to tell her" Paul said

"I know. What if we tell her and she gets heartbroken and then she never talks to us again" I said

"You know that would never happen, love" Paul said

"I know. I want to make sure she's the right age when we tell her" I said

"We will. I promise you when we tell her, she'll understand and take it well" Paul said

"I hope so" I said. Maybe we'd tell Ethel when she's a teenager. She'd probably take it well better or she'd be really mad at me for keeping this huge secret from her. Only time will tell though.
