Alice's P.O.V
December 21, 1970
It was the week of Christmas. Linda and Joseph came to spend Christmas with us. Linda introduced us to the twins that were born in August. She named them Louise and Leopold after her parents. Paul and Joseph took the kids out leaving Linda and I by ourselves. I decided to tell her of my plan.
"Do you really think it will work?" Linda asked
"I hope so. This is my Christmas present for Paul. He'll be so happy" I said
"Alright. I stand by your decision" Linda said
"Good. I'm going to call them now" I said. I reached over for the phone and dialled the number. I waited for an answer.
"Hello?" the voice said
"George?" I said
"Alice! Is that really your voice? It's been awhile since I heard it" George said
"It's me George" I said.
"Where's Paul?" George asked
"He's out with the kids. There's something I need to ask you" I said
"What is it?" George asked
"Would you like to come by for Christmas? I know it would mean the world to Paul if he could see you again" I said
"Of coarse. Pattie and I miss all of you. Pattie especially misses the little ones" George said
"Ethel and Mary miss their Uncle George and Aunt Pattie" I said
"So it's settled. Pattie and I are coming for Christmas" George said
"Great. Oh, and another thing George" I said
"What is it?" George asked
"Do you still talk to John?" I asked. George was silent for a moment and then he let out a sigh.
"No. He hasn't spoken to us since he decided to leave. If you're going to try to get him to come for Christmas dinner, there's no point. He doesn't want to talk to any of us" George said
"I understand. Thanks anyways Geo. We'll see you and Pattie in a few days" I said. I then hung up the phone.
"So what did George say?" Linda asked
"He and Pattie are going to come for Christmas" I said.
"That's good. It'll be nice to see those two again" Linda said. I reached for the phone again.
"Now who are you going to call?" Linda asked
"I'm going to try to call John and see if he's willing to come" I said. I dialled the number and waited an answer. It was Yoko who answered the phone.
"Hello?" she said
"Hi Yoko. It's Alice" I said
"Whoever it is, tell them to fuck off!" I heard John in the background.
"It's Alice!" Yoko called out. There was a silence before John got on the phone.
"Hi Alice. How are you?" he asked. His tone sounded calmer when he was talking to me.
"I'm good. The reason I called is because I wanted to ask you something and I know you might not agree to it" I said
"What is it?" John asked
"Would you and Yoko like to come for Christmas dinner? I know it'd mean the world to Paul if-" I said
"I'm not going if Paul is going to be there" John said
"Come on John. Paul really misses you. I really miss you" I said
"I miss you too Alice but Paul, not so much" John said
"John! Would it kill you to spend this one Christmas with us!?" I said
"It would if I were to spend it with Paul. I'd like to spend it with you though, and maybe even the little ones. Yoko and I would love to see them again" John said
"Then just come here for Christmas" I said
"How about this. The day after Christmas, you come to our place. You bring the little ones with you" John said
"Great. Can I-" I asked
"No! You cannot bring Paul" John said
"So what am I supposed to do? Sneak around his back just so I can spend Christmas with two of my old friends?" I said
"Now you're getting the point. What do you say Alice?" John asked. I thought about it for a moment.
"I'll do it" I said
"Great. See you on the twenty sixth then" John said. Then the line went dead. Why did I just agree to that?
"What was that all about?" Linda asked
"Linda, can you do me a favour?" I asked
"What favour?" Linda asked
"On the twenty sixth, I need you to keep Paul preoccupied" I said
"Alice, what's going on?" Linda asked
"John invited me over to spend Christmas with him and Yoko on the twenty sixth and the thing is I can't bring Paul. I said I'd do it so that's why I need you to keep him preoccupied when I'm out" I said
"So you want me to help you lie to Paul?" Linda asked
"It's not lying. It's just called keeping it a secret and you helping me keep it from him" I said
"Alice, this is a really bad idea but because you're my best friend, I'll help you" Linda said. I hugged her.
"Thank you so much Linda!" I said. Just then, Paul, Joseph and the kids walked in through the door.
"Back so soon" Linda said, walking up to Joseph. She gave him a quick kiss.
"The kids were all getting tired" Joseph said
"We're not tired!" Heather said
"Heather's right. The kids wore us out so Joseph and I are the tired ones" Paul said
"Daddy, can we have hot chocolate?" Heather asked
"Yeah, hot chocolate!" Ethel said
"Alright. Follow me to the kitchen" Joseph said. Joseph went into the kitchen and the kids followed him. That just left Paul, Linda and I.
"Paul?" I said
"Yes, love?" Paul asked
"I think it'd be nice for you and Linda to spend some time together one of these days. You know, get to know each other a bit more" I said. Paul raised an eyebrow at me.
"Alright then. How about it Linda?" Paul asked
"I think it'd be great. How about the twenty sixth?" Linda asked
"That works. Are you sure this okay with you, love?" Paul asked
"Of coarse. It's not like you two are going on a date. It's just two friends getting to know each other a bit more" I said.
"If you say you're okay with it, then I'm okay with it" Paul said. He kissed me before heading into the kitchen. Linda walked up to me and leaned in close to my ear.
"You better hope he doesn't find out. He'll be really hurt when he finds or you've been seeing his best friend behind his back" Linda said
"I know Linda. I know" I said
