Alice's P.O.V

October 10, 1971

I was on the phone, catching up with Linda. It's been almost a month since we last spoke. I think the last time I called her was to tell her the news of Stella's birth.

"So, how is Stella? Is she a happy baby?" Linda asked

"She's fine. She just woke up from a nap so Paul went to go get her" I said

"And how the other two girls?" Linda asked.

"They're fine" I said. Just then, I heard the mail slot on the door open and close. Ethel must have heard it too because she rushed to the door. She really liked getting the mail for some reason.

"I heard a thumping noise. What was that?" Linda asked

"That was Ethel fetching the mail" I said. Ethel walked over to me.

"Mommy, where's Helen?" Ethel asked

"She should be upstairs sweetie. Why?" I asked

"This letter came for her" Ethel said

"Okay. Go find her and give it to her" I said. Ethel nodded and she rushed upstairs.

"Sorry about that Linda" I said, speaking into the phone again.

"That's alright. Anyways, how's it going with the new band?" Linda asked

"It's so much fun. We're almost done with our first album" I said

"That's good. When can I expect a release date?" Linda asked

"Sometime in December. That reminds me, are you, Joseph and the kids coming out for Christmas?" I asked

"Of coarse we are. There's no way we're missing celebrating Christmas and Ethel's birthday with you guys" Linda said

"I've got a big surprise for Ethel this year" I said

"Really? What is it?" Linda asked

"I'm finally going to tell her who her real father is and I was wondering if you could pass that on to Joseph because we both need to tell her since I'm her mother and Joseph is the biological father" I said

"Of coarse. This is a really big step Alice. How do you think she'll take it?" Linda asked

"I just hope she won't be too upset or angry" I said.

"Mommy!" I heard Ethel call for me.

"I've got to go Linda. Ethel needs me for something" I said

"Alright. I'll talk to you later" Linda said. I then hung up the phone and went to go find my daughter. She met me at the bottom of the staircase.

"What's wrong sweetie? Are you hurt? Did you throw up?" I asked. Ethel shook her head.

"I'm okay but I don't think Helen is" Ethel asked

"What do you mean?" I asked

"I gave Helen her letter, she read it and then she started crying" Ethel said. Once Ethel explained, I made my way to Helen's room. The door was closed and on the other side I could hear her crying. I tried opening the door but she locked it.

"Helen!" I said, knocking on the door.

"Go away!" Helen cried. I groaned in frustration and tried opening the door again. I started banging on it again.

"Love, what's going on?" Paul said as he walked up to me, cradling Stella in his arms.

"Helen's upset and she won't let me into her room so I can talk to her" I said. Paul tried knocking on the door this time.

"Alice, I said go away!" Helen said

"Helen, it's Paul. Alice wants to try to make you feel better and talk to you but she can't do that when you've locked yourself in your room" Paul said. The crying stopped and I could hear Helen's footsteps. She opened the door and revealed herself. Her eyes were puffy and red, and her cheeks were moist with tears.

"Alice, you can come in and I'll talk to you" Helen said through sniffles. I nodded and entered her room. She closed the door behind me. We both took a seat on the bed.

"Now, what's got you so upset?" I asked. Helen grabbed the letter and she gave it to me.

"Read the letter. It should explain" Helen said. I started reading the letter.

Dear Helen,

It's been quite awhile since we've seen each other, or even communicated with each other in fact. That's why I'm writing to you but it's not going to end on happy terms. I think it's best that we call off our relationship, or whatever it's called because it doesn't feel like one. To be honest, I've never actually seen you as more than a friend. There were never any feelings more than that. I don't know how you felt about me but I don't think it was the same way. After you get this, please don't try to contact me. It's best for both of us if you don't.

Fred

It was a break up letter. I can see why Helen would be upset. If you're going to break up with a girl, at least do it in person. That is just a really dick move to do.

"I mean, I understand that we don't see each other that often and maybe our relationship wasn't going to work out so perfectly. It's not like I was expecting us to get married or anything, but he could have a least broke up with me in person" Helen said

"Wait, so you're not so much upset to the fact that he did break up with you, it's the fact that he did it through a letter" I said

"Yeah. You don't break up with someone through a letter. I wouldn't be so upset about this if he had did it in person" Helen said. Tears started running down her cheeks again. I pulled her into a comforting hug.

"It'll be okay. One day you'll find a guy who won't ever want to break up with you, whether that be in person, through a phone call or through a letter" I said. Helen stopped her sniffling and looked at me with a smile.

"Thanks Alice. You're a really good friend" Helen said.

"Well I try" I said. I got up and left the room. Paul was still waiting outside for me.

"Is Helen okay?" Paul asked

"Yeah. Fred just broke up with her through a letter" I said

"Well that's shallow of him" Paul said

"I know, but Helen will find a better guy who will want to spend the rest of his life with her" I said.

"I really hope so. Helen's a great girl and any guy would be lucky to have her" Paul said
