Katniss's POV;
The train ride is long, both of us taking turns sleeping and watching guard. We persuaded the train operator to not stop at any other stops. "Thirty minuets!" The pudgy man yells from the front of the train. I sigh and lean my head on the wall, I run my trembling fingers through Peeta's soft curls. I watch him sleep in my lap and snore softly, and for the first time I'm scared. Not for my life, not for Gale's but for Peeta's.
He doesn't deserve this. I never should have drug him into this mess, he's too pure to deal with this. "Peeta." I coo. "Come on, can you get up? I want to talk to you." He stirs and turns into my stomach breathing a heavy sigh. "Peeta." I whisper again
"Hmmm?" He hums.
"I'm sorry I got you into this mess again." I mumble quietly. "I never should have killed Coin."
That seems to get his attention because he rolls over staring at me from my lap. His eyes travel along my face and he touches my chin gently. He pulls me down and kisses me slowly. "Katniss, this war had to happen. If not for you, someone might never have done this. You've done great things."
"But I've killed so many people." I whisper thinking of prim. "Everyone I used to call my friends died because of me. My own sister died trying to help the people I had hurt with my rebellion."
"It wasn't your fault Katniss." He assures me touching my chin again. "None of this was your fault. You've installed hope into people Snow never thought would be possible. They wanted to fight but never had the confidence." I nod taking in his words. "And I don't care if I'm in danger, if go through all the torture in the world if it meant I got to watch you do what you did a few weeks ago."
"But your not going anywhere." I assure him. "I'm not letting you out of my sight, I'll kill anyone and anything comes near us."
"I'm supposed to be protecting you. I am the man, aren't I?" He chuckles.
"I am the mockingjay, aren't I?" I smile.
There's a long pause and we just watch each other's expressions. He touches my face all over and kisses my jaw. "I'm sorry we never had our date." He frowns.
"Maybe afterwards." I tease.
"I'll hold you to that."
"Of course." I smile. When I can no longer take it I press my lips to his hard and forceful. He sits up startling me and finally breaks away. I had completely forgotten about Gale sitting not five feet from us.
"That's a hell of a way to wake up." He scrunches his nose.
"Sorry." Peeta smirks before fixing my hair and blouse. I sneak one last kiss and stand slowly. The train comes to a yielding stop and Gale holds up a finger and walks out to check the surrounding.
"It's just Haymitch and the squad." He says as he comes back into the doorway to collect his bag. It's the same one he used during the war. I should have been smart with my suit and threw it in the river like I wanted to before. Peeta's hand finds mine as we emerge from the train and Haymitch pulls me into a deep hug.
"Do you understand how serious this is?" He asks with fear flaming in his eyes.
"No I guess no I-"
"Half of the population of Panem is hunting you down. I seemed to change the minds of the people here in two, but who knows about the districts. People are for sure ready to kill you at second. Don't be surprised if your house is quiet popular when you get back."
"Don't lie them destroy it Haymitch." I breath.
"I won't sweetheart, I sent a new soldier there to guard it. Holmes." I nod and we continue into the train station. I have that same fear I had a few weeks ago, and then I realize the games were never over.
