Most of the impact to the ashy ground was taken by my knees. That's were I collapsed; my fingers curl around the bottom of the tree. I dig my fingers into it as far as they'll go, I feel the tears starting to fall.
At first they were quick and silent, then they turned into violent sobs louder than screams. Because there's no activity here, my sobs ring through the silent district.
I stare at what used to be the Mellark Bakery. Where my family was given the last stitch of hope. But most importantly, where Peeta through me the bread.
I hear his footsteps coming quickly and I completely loose it and fall to the ground the rest of the way. "Katniss!" He gasps. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"
"Peeta! I'm sorry, I'm so so sorry."
"For what?" He asks frantically his eyes searching my face.
"For never saying thank you! I never even thought of it Peeta. I'm so sorry!" I feel my heartbeat starting to irradiate.
"Katniss it's okay! Please. It's okay!" He pulls me into his chest.
"Peeta...thank you so much..."
"Yes Katniss, your welcome. I was never really worried about a thank you. I just wanted to make an impression.."
"You did." I smile into his chest. Gradually my lips meet his, this kiss is a battle of dominance. Our tongues battle and soon his wins, I smile into the kiss running my fingers through his soft hair.
"That's enough sweetheart. Your annoying Gale." I hear Haymitch's voice in my ears. I guess Peeta did too and he laughs quietly.
"Well why does he have an earpiece?" I ask.
"Because I'm a vital piece in this revelation."
"Let's go Peeta." I smile taking his hand. We walk through the village until we reach the main square.
"Gale said this took the most damage during the bombing. Brace yourself." I nod as we walk up the hill that overlooks the main road. A smell hits my nose, no a stench. Worst then when I used to go to school and children weren't able to shower for weeks.
When we come over the hill, everything's gone. The buildings all flattened to the ground, I sink to my knees in front of Peeta and start to crawl. I'm not she to where, but I crawl. My hand hits something hard and it crunches. I lift my hand and all my breath leaves my body.
A human skull.
"P-Peeta." I beg. He again holds me close whispering in my ear. "Your okay Katniss, I promise. No one can hurt you. I won't let them alright."
I shake my head. "No. Snows probably watching us right now. He knows we're here."
"No katniss, he doesnt."
I nod and lean my forehead against his chest.
"Have you gone to your house yet?" I ask and he shakes his head.
"No, I haven't. Come."
We stand and he leads me to the road back to the victor village. Buttercup rustles in my bag but I shush him. "I have something to show you." Peeta tells me as we enter his doorway to his room. "Well, a few things.." He sits me down on the bed and pulls out a long box. He opens the top and smiles to himself. "Here." He hands me piece of rough drawing paper. I flip them over and see a beautiful girl, her eyes are seam gray and his hair is in a gorgeous braid.
"Who is this?" I whisper looking at the rest of them.
"Their you obviously."
I feel myself blush as I look to the floor. "Come, there's more."
