Kakashi
It wasn’t enough, not enough to tell the hokage anything. Rin was smart, too smart to do more than she had to and she was playing defence. She wouldn’t attack unless necessary and when she did it was only at a genin level but with her sharingan she was able to dodge and keep par with my movement and attacks. She pushed off my arms and landed on her feet sliding a few feet away from me.
“I guess I’ll have to kick it up a notch” This is what I had been waiting for, ninjutsu. She put her hands together but seemed to freeze in place.
“Rin…” Her hands flew to her neck and a harsh cry escaped her lips.
“Rin!” I was at her side a moment later as she dropped to her knee’s breathing hard, her small frame fell into me.
"Easy, easy Rin..."
“K-Kakashi…”
“We need to seal that mark, it’s too dangerous…”
“No, Kakashi…”
“What is it?” I was surprised to hear her laugh but I was more surprised when I heard the jingling of bells and in her hand were the three bells. She got to her feet a slight smirk coming to her face.
“A ninja must see through deception and also be capable of controlling their emotions during a mission. I appreciate that you care so much but there was a reason I didn’t use ninjutsu or genjutsu and you should have figured that one out.” She pushed back her hair and I saw the mark.
“First I didn’t want to chance losing control of this thing; I was having a hard enough time using my sharingan. Second I knew there was a slim chance of beating you head on like that and I noticed you were holding back. So I played you’re emotions against you.” I sighed as I got to my feet and shook my head.
“We need to seal it, later today.”
“Fine” She looked towards the main area when the timer went off and began walking off. I sighed again as I followed behind her. She ruined the point of this exercise but she learned quickly. She was able to observe and create a plan all during our fight and apply it. She was good, too good.
Rin
Maybe it was dirty trick but I needed to use something to my advantage. So using what happened this morning against him was my best bet.
“Y-You got a bell!?” I let the three drop from my hand but kept hold of the string.
“Actually I got three” They stared in silence and I smiled then as I walked to Naruto and cut of his ties.
“Here…” I handed each of them bell and sighed as I stepped back.
“What…but Rin you got the bells you deserve one!” Naruto began to argue. I shrugged.
“Yeah but the three of you have worked hard in the academy to get here and I haven’t so I’m okay with going back” I felt a hand on my shoulder and glanced up at Kakashi.
“So that’s it then, Rin’s going back…” I looked at the others.
“Girls have to stick together”
“What?” I looked at Sakura and she sighed but threw down her bell as a smile came to her face.
“If Rin is going back then so will I!” I smiled slightly and heard another bell hit the ground. I glanced at Sasuke and his dark eyes met mine.
“What kind of brother am I if I don’t look out for my sister first” I felt someone take my hand and I met the blue eyes of Naruto as he dropped his own bell in my open palm. He grinned then as he pulled me beside him so we were all facing Kakashi.
“She’s part of this team to, we’re all in this together, believe it!” I smiled slightly then as Kakashi looked over the three of us.
“Is that how you all feel?” I could hear the slight threat in his voice but no one faltered. A smile came to his face then as he stood up straight.
“Then you all pass, congratulations.”
“W-Wait…what?”
“The point of this exercise was to see if you could work as a team, or put the team before yourself. Because of Rin’s willingness to sacrifice her-self for the three of you and the three of you not willing to let her go alone you were all able to prove that you are capable of teamwork.” I raised my eyebrow slightly.
“The other squads I’ve tested have done exactly what I said. Sakura what did Rin give you in the forest?”
“Um a ninja herb that can be used as food, she told me which ones to pick and give some to the others…”
“Exactly, in that she wasn’t certain she would get the bells and didn’t want the rest of the team to starve because of her failure after she told you to leave the bells to her.”
“So it didn’t matter that she broke the rules?” Kakashi shook his head slightly.
“In the Shinobi world those who break the rules are scum and that’s true but those who abandon their friends are worse than scum” I smiled then as I looked at Kakashi.
“But you all pass, and squad seven starts there first mission tomorrow” I grinned and nearly fell over when Naruto hugged me.
“We did it!” I laughed as he swung me around once and set me on my feet. I glanced to Sasuke and noticed the slight smile tug on his lips.
“Let’s go home” We all looked to Kakashi sensei and followed behind him. Coming back was good, for more than one thing; I was learning things that the Akatsuki could never teach me; teamwork being only one of these lessons.I guess I could stand being on a team.
