CHAPTER TWELVE:
Avoiding Trouble

"How did the mission go?" Pain asks Itachi and Kana who are standing before him in his office.

"Well." Itachi answers for the speechless Kana.

"Did you take him down easily?" he flicks through some papers.

"Yes." Itachi responds making Pain nod.

"Next time make sure you come straight to me so I know." he says and points to the door.

Kana and Itachi walk out. After exiting the office, the two look at each other for a while. Not wanting to have an awkward conversation of why she was crying, she spins around on her heel and hurries away. Itachi feels the urge to call out to her but manages to not give into temptation.

"KANAAA!" she hears Deidara's distinct voice yell. She turns around to see Deidara sprinting for his life, with Hidan hot on his tail. Hidan's scythe is swinging around rapidly in Deidara's direction as he runs after the troublemaking blonde.

"What's going on?" she asks curiously as they fast approach her. "Hey! I s-" Kana is cut off by Deidara dashing behind her, using her as a human shield.

Hidan aims his scythe at Deidara and slashes it down at an intense speed. A moment too late, Hidan realises that Kana stands in place of his target. At this point, he has already swung his scythe down and it is too late to stop it mid-air. Kana prepares herself to flash away easily, when a dark figure appears in front of her.

Itachi easily stops the scythe from slashing through her body with his bare hand.

Kana simply stands there, extremely shocked at what just happened. The world seems to stop.

"Is there something going on here that I should know about?" Hidan asks with a lopsided smirk. He pulls his scythe away and watches with interest as Itachi's attention is immediately on Kana.

"Are you okay?" Itachi glances back at her over his shoulder as he asks.

"Yeah, I-"

"OH! I see... you two hooking up?" Hidan leans in closer to Kana's face, past Itachi's shoulder.

Itachi pushes Hidan away from her face, leaving Kana still in shock.

"I see what's going on here..." Hidan repeats himself, still smirking.

"You won't be able to see anything, when I'm done with you." Itachi comments.

"Get wrecked!" Kana exclaims to Hidan and sticks out her tongue childishly.

Hidan rolls his eyes and walks away, his scythe slung over his shoulder. Kana feels a tap on her back and turns around to see a sheepish looking Deidara.

"Sorry I used you as a human shield. Is what Hidan was saying true, hm? Are you and Itachi together?" he asks with a confused look.

"Well, no." she begins. Kana looks behind her and realises that Itachi is long gone. She pouts and crosses her arms over her chest.

"Why does he always do that? Itachi does something weird or unexpected and then leaves before providing me with a well-deserved explanation!"

"He cares." comments Deidara. She furrows her brows and looks at him in confusion.

"He said that?" she questions.

"He doesn't need to. It's obvious, hm. You just don't see it."
