CHAPTER THIRTY ONE
Missions on Missions
_______________________"Where were you last night, Kana, hm?" Diedara quizzes her with curiosity as she takes a sip of her coffee.
"Well, where did you look for me?" she asks. Kana opens the fridge and searches around for anything she can use to make breakfast.
"In Itachi's room." Deidara responds as he rests his chin in his palm.
"Is that all? It is a pretty big base, you know." Kana responds as she cracks an egg and drops it onto the oily pan.
"I guess. So you didn't go out? You were here the whole time?" he curiously asks.
"Why did you want to find me?"
"I miss hanging out. Ever since you and Itachi... it just feels like you haven't had much time for me, un." he explains with sadness clear in his voice. Kana turns away from the frying pan and looks at Deidara.
"I'm sorry, Dei Dei. You're my best friend." she sighs upon realising how terrible of a friend she has been lately. "I'm all yours today."
Deidara's eyes light up and he smiles brightly.
"Really?" he confirms."Yes, really." she chuckles. He smiles again and she can't help but have a grin spread across her face too from the sight of his pure happiness.
"Kana, I need to speak to you." Pain's voice rings in her ear from behind Kana and worry instantly washes over her.
Did he know Itachi and I were in the Leaf Village during his attack!?
Is her first thought."Sure, Pain." she calmly turns around and gives him a quick nod before spinning back to face Deidara.
"Sorry, Deidara. I'll be all yours right after this." she insists.
"Deidara... you come too."
Deidara stands up after hearing his name and he quickly rushes to walk beside Kana towards Pain's office.
"I wonder what it's about." he leans over and whispers to her.
"Yeah... I have no idea." she shrugs.
He makes a 'hmm' noise as they make their way to meet Pain.
"Done anything wrong recently, Kana?" Deidara cheekily asks with a nudge into her shoulder.
Kana chuckles but hesitates. "Actually... there's something I've got to tell you." she says. Deidara immediately becomes serious and looks at Kana with concern.
"Hn? What is it?" he questions.
Her voice turns to a low whisper. "Last night Itachi and I went to Konoha as a birthday present for me. When we woke up the entire village was in ruins and Pain was wreaking havoc." she quickly explains before they reach Pain's range of hearing.
"What? What do you mean?" Deidara asks in confusion. He seems completely dumbfounded. Kana's suspicions were right... Pain had kept the attack a secret from the rest of the Akatsuki and kept them in the dark as well.
"He was hell bent on destroying the entire Hidden Leaf and he didn't tell any of us." Kana replies and shakes her head in disbelief.
"Maybe you got it wrong." Deidara suggests.
"I know what I saw." she stands her ground and Deidara knows she isn't lying. He nods.
Kana motions for him to continue walking with her. He picks up the pace towards his office.
"W-Why would he?" Deidara murmurs.
"Look, I have no idea. You have to erase all this from your mind for now though, okay?" she quickly says before latching onto him and pulling his cloak into Pain's office behind her.
"Kana, Deidara. Mission."
They both walk forward and pick up the documents on his desk.
