CHAPTER THIRTY
Pain's Assault

"HELP!"

Kana's eyes shoot open and she immediately sits up straight. She looks to her side and Itachi is sitting up in confusion as well.

"What the hell?" Kana turns to the full length window and the village is in ruins. Her eyes widen and she throws a pair of clean clothes on before sprinting to the window. The hotel they are in is quite a distance from the centre of the village so the explosions and damage didn't reach them.

She can see a person high up in the air inflicting the damage.

Itachi is dressed and beside her in an instant and he turns to look into her eyes.

"What do you want to do?" he asks. The decision is hers.

Kana is about to insist that they head back to the base immediately so they aren't caught in the crossfire between whoever is doing this and the Hidden Leaf ninja. Before she can open her mouth to say that, she looks out the window again and sees a young girl trapped under a boulder with nobody around to help her.

She can see the pain and terror in her eyes from miles away.

"We're going there. Now." Kana throws on her ninja outfit without the Akatsuki cloak and Itachi is wearing a black top and track pants. What he usually wears under the Akatsuki robe as well.

Kana laces her fingers with his and flashes to the little girl.

They land on their feet beside her.

The young girl screams out. "Help me! Please help, I can't find my mummy!" she wails.

Kana kneels down and lifts the boulder off the girl's trapped body with one hand and throws it aside. She bends down beside her to check for any injuries. The girl has a broken arm and can't stand properly on her left leg. Kana picks her up.

"Transform into the woman from last night if you're going to find a medical nin." Itachi says. Kana nods her head and quickly transforms.

"I'll meet up with you later." Itachi says. Kana agrees and flashes to stand directly in front of him, the girl still in her arms. Kana and Itachi lean forward at the same time and kiss. The curious young girl's eyes are glued to the two like a hawk.

"Be safe." Kana insists.

"You too." Itachi responds.

Kana flashes to the nearest medical nin she can sense. It's Sakura.

"She was trapped under a boulder. Her left arm is broken and she has severe damage on her left leg." Kana says. Sakura nods her head without any further questions and immediately gets to work.

The whole village is in absolute chaos. Everyone is running around screaming and trying to find their loved ones. Dead bodies litter the uneven ground and everywhere she turns somebody different is crying out for help.

This is insane.

"Come on! FIGHT ME!" she hears a boy exclaim. Kana looks over to the source of the noise and sees a young boy with a blue scarf around his neck. He's standing tall, although he is clearly running low on both chakra and stamina. He's yelling at someone.

Not someone... that is one of the Six Paths of Pain.

Kana quickly conceals her distinct chakra before it notices her. She concentrates for a moment.

That's Konohamaru.

The hell does he think he's doing!?

"No, Konohamaru! Why didn't you run when you had the chance!? You have so much potential! One day you could even be Hokage... you can't throw your life away like this!" Ebisu sensei screams.
