45 - The Awakening

CHAPTER FOURTY FIVE
The Awakening

When Pain and Konan aren't at the Akatsuki base, they are ruling over the Hidden Rain Village. Today, Kana and Itachi were instructed by Pain to meet him at the village. Which is unusual, considering they've never been asked to step foot in that village before.

Kana and Itachi have straw hats on their heads as they walk through the dull and wet town.

"Are you hungry?" Itachi asks as they pass a small food stand displaying onigiri.

Kana comes to a hault. "Itachi, now is not the time for food. We've been summoned to the Hidden Rain suspiciously by our leader. We have no idea what we are doing here... and I have a bad feeling. But yes. I am hungry."

They sit down and Kana asks for ten onigiri. The shop owner explains that she doesn't have ten, so Kana settles for one.

"What do you think we're doing here, anyway?" Kana asks between bites.

Itachi glances around at his surroundings. "I'm not sure." the sound of the rain hitting the ground is loud. She watches, entranced by his movements as he sips on his tea mindlessly.

Even as he does the most normal of things, Kana can't help but fall a little more in love with him each passing second.

She finishes up her food before thanking the kind elderly shop owner.

"He said the tallest tower in the village, right?" she confirms. Itachi nods swiftly and they start walking there.

She peers to her side and spots a toad. It strikes her as odd. They hadn't seen a toad once the whole time being in the village. Not to mention, she's getting a weird feeling from it. Itachi is staring at the toad suspiciously as well as they walk past.

They reach the tallest tower and make their way to the top where Pain and Konan wait.

"I see you made it here alright." Pain comments.

"So, are you going to tell us why we're here, now?" Kana speaks up. Pain's eyes open and he looks straight past them. Kana and Itachi turn around to see Tobi is standing in the dark behind them.

How didn't they notice?

"Kana, Itachi."

His voice... it's different; deeper. Just like the time he wished her happy birthday.

"Tobi? What are you doing here?"

"I called this little meeting." he answers as he walks out from the darkness. "From behind the shadows, I have been leading the Akatsuki. Pain answers to me."

She is completely speechless. This dork? This complete imbecile, has been behind the scenes pulling the strings this whole time?

"But you're an idiot." she blurts out.

He chuckles. "I'm quite the opposite, actually. I must have done an outstanding job at acting if I fooled even you."

"So, what do you want? Why are we here?" Itachi asks. He's so calm and collected.

"You are here because I believe we should join forces. If us five work together we could take over the world."

"Pain, there is an intruder." Konan whispers in Pain's ear. Kana perks up upon hearing this information. Pain and Konan take their leave, jumping off the balcony of the tower.

"Why would we join forces with you? We don't even know who you are. You hide behind that mask, yet you expect us to trust you?" Kana fires back.

"I am an Uchiha."
