"They're beautiful." Hazel whispered, her eyes glazed over, her voice hushed, as though she was in a trance.
Her eyes darted around the surroundings, as though her eyes were hungry, eating everything she saw. Her lips were set in a permanent smile, her luminescent eyes sparkling with joy. Nico didn't have the heart to snap at her, to show her his annoyance.
"You're brooding." Hazel murmured, finally addressing her distressed brother.
"I'm happy for you, Hazel. Really." Nico said, but flinched internally when he heard the sharpness in his tone.
Hazel smiled sympathetically, walking over to him, where he sat at the windowsill.
"He'll come around, Nico. I swear to the gods." She stroked the side of his face, before pressing a soft kiss on his forehead.
How many times have Nico repeated that to himself? How many nights have he stayed up wondering who his soulmate was? How many days have he spent, staring at nothing, hoping that the black and white world he lived in would suddenly flood with color? How many tears has he shed, torturing himself with the thought that he would never find his soulmate and that he'd never get to see the true beauty of the world? He couldn't help but feel that Hazel was just trying to comfort him with that statement. But Nico forced himself to smile at his sister reassuringly.
"Okay." She beamed.
"Nico!" An all-too-familiar voice called his name.
Percy Jackson.
Nico had been in love with that boy once, maybe still in love. But no amount of accidental touching could have changed his view of the world. Percy didn't love him. Percy wasn't his soulmate. Nico knew deep in his heart that Percy was not his. Percy didn't belong to him. And yet, he still had that little part of him that refused to let go.
"Come, my good friend. We're going out." That's when Annabeth poked her head in. Seeing her sent the twinge of jealousy spring in his chest.
"Don't manhandle the poor boy, Percy." She chided, and Percy laughed.
The sound stole whatever oxygen Nico had in his lungs. He wondered if Fates were playing a cruel game with his heart. Perhaps.
Numbly, he allowed Percy to drag him out of the door, Hazel laughing behind them. Although the only thing he could concentrate on was the very fingers that curled around his wrist and how he didn't want them to leave.
###
The cafe was nearly empty, apart from a couple of customers scattered around on the sofas in the cafe.
"Remind me why I'm following the both of you again?" Nico mumbled.
"Because! Hazel told us that you needed cheering up, so after Percy gets his coffee we can do whatever you want."
"Can we go home?" Annabeth glared at him playfully before telling him that that option was not available.
He sighed, and watched her speeding off, joining Percy at the queue.
"Excuse me." Nico felt someone poke him in the spot between his shoulder blades.
The pain was pleasurable. The last thing Nico remembered before his world changed completely was hearing the very same sharp intake of breath behind him. Nico couldn't quite explain it, but tingles shot up his spine, his vision blurring, mixing the whites and the blacks to form grey shades, and suddenly, he saw the very thing he'd been longing for for years.
Colors.
He whipped around.
Nico's breath caught in his throat. The person behind him was stunning. He had long, golden colored lashes, hundreds of freckles dotting his cheeks and nose. But his eyes. Oh gods his eyes. They were breathtaking. To put it to words, they seemed cold at first, but when Nico truly looked, Nico saw the compassion in them. The flecks of whites in his blue eyes were stunning too.
"Are you...do you..." His tongue refused to move, and all Nico could do was nod.
The blond smiled, and Nico felt his heart skip a beat. The sudden urge to kiss the boy in front of him was overwhelming, but he managed to curb the surge of feelings. So the two stood there, staring in shock at each other.
"I'm...I'm Nico." Nico murmured breathlessly, and he earned a soft smile from the blond.
"Will." They shared a quick smile.
The silence that washed over them should have been awkward, but to him, it felt just right. Like how all the pieces of the puzzle fitted together. Perfection. They probably would have stayed like that forever if it weren't for Percy, whom cleared his throat and made them fly apart from each other.
"What...oh my gods. Is it true? Are you-" Both his and Annabeth's jaws dropped.
"What are we doing, oh my goodness? Get to know each other, you two!" Annabeth said after a few moments of silence, and practically pushed Percy out of the cafe.
Nico watched them leave. Suddenly his feelings for the green-eyed boy seemed insignificant. He turned to Will, his lips curling up in a goofy grin. Gingerly, he wrapped his pale fingers around Will's wrist, hauling him closer and farther into the cafe.
End.
