Wedding Gift

I never thought that I will happily celebrate Christmas with the people I never thought I will meet. We celebrated it in our house with Vince's family. Mabilis lumipas ang araw. And now it's new year, a new start for all of us.

Napatingin ako sa langit habang pinapanood ang mga fireworks display. How beautiful those lights are but still those were not made in a beautiful way. Beyond those beautiful lights are those laborers who exerted their efforts and almost risk their lives for a job of making something beautiful out of materials that can almost hurt them.

Bahagya akong napangiti ng mapagtanto ko na halos ikumpara ko ang sarili ko sa mga fireworks. Right now, I feel like my situation right now is like a firework, it looks beautiful but beyond that... the process that I went through... is not easy.

A warm chest and hands covered me from behind. He rested his head on my shoulder. We both looked at the sky still filled with beautiful fireworks display. His hand rested on my tummy.

"Happy New Year..." mahinang bulong niya sa akin. Lumawak ang ngiti ko.

"Happy New Year din..." I greeted him. "Hindi ka na sasama sa kanila?"

"Hmm, I want us to join them..." aniya. Bumaba ang tingin ko sa pamilya namin na nasa baba at nagpapailaw at nag-iingay. They were even joined by some of our neighbors. "But it's better na we spend this year's first hour together. We can join them later kapag hindi na masyadong mausok."

Hindi na ako nakapagsalita. I silently continued watching the fireworks.

"By the way, I have a gift for you..." he suddenly said.

Kumalas ako sa pagkakayakap sa kanya at hinarap siya. May inilabas siyang kahon na itim. My eyes darted at him but he's busy with the box that he's holding. Muling bumba ang tingin ko sa hawak niya. He slowly opened it, revealing a silver necklace with a tiny hourglass as a pendant.

Nag-angat ako ng tingin sa kanya. He's still smiling at me. "I wanted give this to you last Christmas but I realize that today's a great time to give this to you. I want a new start. A new life with you and our son... but in order for me to do that I need to pay for what I did. Kailangan kong itama ang mga pagkakamali ko..." aniya at kinuha 'yung kwintas. He moved closer to me.

Isinuot niya ito sa akin. Hinawakan ko ang maliit na hourglass at sinulyapan siya. "Why are you giving this to me?" mahina kong tanong.

Humiwalay siya sa akin. He genuinely smiled at me and hugged me. My hand went on his back. "Because I want you to wait for me... like how I am willing to wait for you. Kahit matagal pa. Are you willing to do that?"

Parang may kung anong sumakit sa puso ko. "I-I already waited for you... for so long."

"I'm sorry," mahinang bulong niya. "Maaantay mo pa ba ako ulit ngayon?"

"What's this? Are you going to leave us? Aalis ka na naman?" nabasag ang boses ko. "I thought you want a new start? Bakit... bakit ganito?"

"I am not leaving."

"Then... why are you asking me to wait?" nanginig pa rin ang boses ko.

"I want you to wait for me hanggang sa maging maayos na ang lahat."

Mariin akong napapikit. I unconsciously tighten my hug to him. Siya ang unang kumalas sa pagkakayakap sa akin. Marahan siyang ngumiti at hinawakan ang aking mukha. He gently caressed it as he softly looked at me.
