Chapter 35

After another restless night, Kaia was up early. They'd had a nice dinner together the previous night despite all of what had happened earlier in the day.

She cleaned up the kitchen from the night before and started to get breakfast ready for the twins. As she set the water to boil for their cereal, she glanced down the hallway that led to the bedrooms. She slowly walked that way and stopped in front of Marian's bedroom door and opened it. She gasped when she looked inside. It was stripped bare. The furniture was gone. The walls cleaned and repainted. Her eyes welled with tears.

Zayn got out of bed. He could smell coffee brewing. He headed towards the kitchen but stopped when he saw Kaia standing in the middle of Marian's room.

"Baby," he said gently as he walked towards her. 

She turned to him.   "I...I can't believe she...."

He pulled her into his arms and held her close. "I know baby," he said gently. "You don't need to be in here. Come on."  He pulled her out of the room and shut the door behind them.  He held her close.

"I'm going to go sit with her today," she said.

"She won't really be awake yet."

"I know, but I need to be there. Are you okay if I don't take the twins."

He smiled at her and caressed her cheek. "I think we'll be ok. Do you want me to drive you?"

"No," she said. "I'll be okay."

He looked deep into her eyes. "Baby is there something else going on? Anything you want to talk about or tell me?" He couldn't help but think there was more worrying her than just Marian. The fear of Liam doing something was still in the forefront of his mind. He knew that he and Kaia were close, but now that Zayn knew how Liam felt, it put him on edge. "You know you can tell me anything. Good or bad."

She covered his hand with hers. "No," she said and then wrapped her arms around his waist. Savouring in his comfort and warmth. There was a million and one things she wanted to tell him, but she couldn't. "I...I just need to know that everything is going to be alright. With all of us."

Zayn held her as tightly as he could. "I promise baby, I promise." He kissed the top of her head.

"I love you Zayn," she said into his chest. "I would be so lost without you."

"I know baby," he said. "I feel the same way." He knew she felt lost and he knew she was incredibly upset with herself for what Marian had done. But he knew it wasn't her fault. It was the grief. "Let's get the twins up and then you can get ready." He lifted her chin up and kissed her. "I love you."

When Kaia got to the hospital, she found Harry asleep in a chair in the room. She glanced at Marian who was still sedated and sleeping.

She gently shook his shoulder. "Harry," she said gently.

He woke with a start. "Oh, Kaia," he said. "What...what are you doing here?" He asked sitting up and wiping the sleep from his eyes.

She sat down next to him. "I figured you could use a break," she said with a small smile.

He looked over at his beloved and saw she was still resting. He smiled at Kaia. "Thanks love," he said standing up. "Didn't sleep very well last night."

"I can imagine not," she said. "I'll sit with her today. That way you can do whatever you need to do."

He walked over to Marian and placed a gentle kiss on her forehead. "I love you," he whispered to her. He walked over to Kaia and wrapped his arm around her waist as they headed towards the door. "Thank you Kaia," he said.
