“You two wouldn’t mind sharing a pull out couch, would you?” I asked trying to change the subject again. I walked quickly to the closet and opened it. The smell of fresh linen hit me. I had done up the laundry a couple days ago.
“Not at all.” Dean called from the kitchen. “We prefer to stay close.”
I felt my heart sink. “By partners you meant-“
“We are not dating!” Sam laughed from the kitchen. “Just very old friends. Could say we were like brothers.”
I nodded and pulled down a sheet and a comforter. I walked out into my living room. I listened as they walked around my house and finally saw them standing in the doorway. I started to take off the couch cushions. My house wasn’t decorated in any really nice way. Everything was solid color and mostly earth tones. I had little. I didn’t even own a television. I wasn’t really attached to this place. It was left to me from my family. I plan on traveling when I am a little more financially stable.
“Let me help.” Dean stepped forward and started to reach for the pull out handle.
“Thanks.” I mumbled as we both pulled up and brought the bed out. It creeked and then fell with a thud unto my hard wood.
Dean smiled at me and then stood back. He looked down at the bed and seemed to measure it up. From what I saw he was relieved to not have to drive anywhere this late. I wondered where they were from and how long they had been on the road. But as I watched Dean I felt something in the pit of my stomach start to ache. I set my hand on my stomach and pressed but the pressure didn’t leave. I turned away and started to unfold the sheets.
“I will go get the bags.” Sam whispered from the doorway. Then I turned to see he was gone already.
I looked over at Dean who was studying me. He gave me a short smile. “It is very nice of you to let us stay.”
I shrugged. “Maybe I will sleep better with other people here.” I shivered. “I haven’t slept good since…”
“What did you see that has you frightened?” Dean asked seriously.
I knew that he was going to keep asking. I turned and looked into his eyes. He didn’t look mean or even like he would laugh at me. He looked kind and caring. I sighed and felt that if I never got this off of my chest I would go mad.
I took a deep breath. “Fine. I will tell you. You will probably laugh or even change your mind about staying here.” I ran my hand through my hair and sat on the edge of the bed. I looked down at the ground. My hands were shaking. “Brandon was always asking me out, so to get him off my back I told him he could take me to dinner and if I liked it I would give him a chance. I wasn’t planning on liking it.”
“You don’t have to tell-“ Dean broke in.
“Just let me tell it from the beginning.” I muttered and looked up at him. He nodded so I continued. “He took me to this nice restaurant. It was actually not a bad date. But then he parked us out there and told me that he wanted a walk. I refused but he said he wouldn’t drive me home until I just walked for maybe five minutes at the most. I obliged. He had puppy eyes.” I cracked a short desolate smile. “We were out there and I rejected him. He was getting angry and I was almost thankful when we heard something in the woods. So he went to check it out and maybe cool off. It was not even five minutes. Then he called out to me. only I knew it was wrong. It was his voice, but it wasn’t him.” I stopped and watched Dean.
