Dean sat quietly and chewed his warm pancake as Emily watched Sam eat. He shifted his weight and kept the corner of his eyes on her. She had made a startling discovery here and what Cas said was starting to come true. Her powers were on the rise. They had to get her to Bobby’s and that safe room. They had to form a plan before anything bad happened.

He stopped chewing when he saw she had started to sip at her coffee. She hadn’t touched most of her food yet. He turned and looked at her full on. She noticed and looked over the tip of her mug at him. He watched her eyes as she stared at him. Her eyes glinted a slight gold but didn’t fully turn. He thought maybe he imagined it. Then her eyes lightened and he could tell she was smiling. She gave him a slight wink and then turned to eat. She set her mug down and started to devour her food.

Dean looked over across the table at Sam. Sam was just pushing his food around the table with his fork. Dean smiled and continued to eat. He liked these two people. He was comfortable to sit here with them forever and just eat breakfast. Even if they didn’t speak for a long time. The silence was comfortable. He knew that sooner or later Emily would be able to read his mind and emotions, if not more, and he wanted to treasure the privacy he had left.

“How do you kill a demon?” Emily asked suddenly.

Dean almost choked on his sausage link. She just asked it so bluntly at the table that he wasn’t expecting it. She was treating it like it was conversations she had with everyone during breakfast. Dean turned and was about to open his mouth with Sam beat him to the punch.

“We have this dagger that can kill one and send it back to hell.” Sam explained in a hushed voice. “That or we exercise it and then the host can be saved.”

“Exercising demons.” Emily let out a nervous chuckle. “I am way over head.”

“It isn’t that hard. We just tie him down and read an exert. You won’t ever be close to it.” Dean imagined her eyes when she saw that black smoke fly into the air. He hated the innocence he imagined she would lose if she saw it. But her role in all this was inevitable that she would lose so much of her innocence.

“Good.” Emily whispered and took her mug in her hands again. He felt her shift and he realized that she was scared.

“There are horrible unimaginable things in this world, but it is people like us who put an end to it.” Dean spoke carefully as he put down his fork on his empty plate and looked up to match Sam’s stare. “We are the protectors of the good in this world. The only ones fighting for humanity at this point.”

At that moment Kimberly appeared at the end of the table and searched to find the plates all empty or almost empty. She gave Dean a polite smile and focused on him. Dean gave her a wayward smile and stacked the plated together. The conversation between the three was gone for now. Nothing else needed to be said.

“I hope you enjoyed your meals.” Kimberly was smiling peppishly as she took the plates in her hands. “Can I interest anyone in desert?”

Dean didn’t hesitate, it had been a long day and he needed something to lift his spirits. “Have any pie?”

Kimberly nodded. “Our special today is blueberry.”

Emily coughed and Sam grinned. Dean smiled also and nodded. “We will take three slices of blueberry pie.”

Kimberly nodded and padded off toward the kitchen. Dean didn’t even watch her go like he usually did to waitresses. He turned and focused on Emily. He saw her fidget with her mug before sitting it on the table. As she retracted her hand he saw it was shaking. He remembered the first monster he killed. When he knew in the deepest part of his soul that he was doomed to lead a life of hunting until he died. It was this moment at the diner that Dean knew this was happening to Emily. She killed a beast and now she was heading straight to a pit of demons.
