“Sam, wake up.” Dean growled as he watched Emily disappear out of sight. He stepped back from the window and took a deep breath. Her eyes haunted his thoughts. They were so true and kind that Dean found he was surprised by how much he liked her.
“What time is it?” Sam muttered sleepily from under his covers.
“Morning. And we have a long day ahead of us.” Dean started for the bathroom. “I want to have a lead before she gets back. I want to stop this thing before it gets her.” He stopped shy of the bathroom door and thought about what he just proclaimed. He knew he meant it. Never before was he going to fight for someone as hard as he was going to fight for her.
“I already have a thought. Had a weird dream last night… I think it is a spirit. A dark spirit that changes itself to trick lovers into walking into their death. Probably died a similar death in those woods. I will check the records and newspapers for something.” Sam yawned and rolled over onto his side but made no movement to get out of bed. “But enjoy the fact that we are sleeping somewhere that isn’t a cheap motel.”
“I would enjoy it if I didn’t have such a bad feeling in my gut.” Dean mumbled before he finally walked in and shut the bathroom door to his brother. He stood and looked in the mirror. He looked into his eyes and saw that there was a light in them that hadn’t been there a day or two ago. Something seemed lighter in his features. He shook his head and started to strip for a shower.
I walked back toward home quietly. There was no one home at Mrs. Whites which made me think she was out with friends or something social. Sometimes she went places so it didn’t worry me. I turned a corner toward my street when I saw something catch the corner of my eye. I looked back to my left and stared into my nightbors yard. There was something red on the grass. I walked closer, close enough to bump into the fence, and stared at it harder. It was a blanket. But it made me uneasy. The color was blood-like, almost too blood-like.
I turned to walk to my house when the black thing was standing across the street. My whole body became numb and I felt my knees buckle. I stared at it in terror and utter surprise. But it didn’t see me. It didn’t know I saw it. I watched where it’s red beating eyes were looking and saw it was fixated on a couple. A young couple who were laughing along the street while walking a dog. I looked back at the thing and saw it was gone.
I shuddered and almost ran home. The whole way I knew that it was going to try to kill those people next. Tonight, maybe. And I had to tell Sam and Dean. I had to figure things out. I had to save them. As I got closer to my house I saw a police car outside my house. The lights weren’t flashing but it still made me uneasy.
I ran up to the door and heard whispering behind it. I slowed and listened near the window at my living room that was still open. I knew I heard Sam. And then another voice. Sheriff Brody. My body went numb. He was the man whose son had had a thing for me in high school. They weren’t a very nice family. I had no idea how he became sheriff in the first place.
“Look, I know that you boys just got in town, but how do you know Emily? As sheriff of this town I worry about everyone here. It is my job to protect them from weirdos who stroll into town and take advantage of nice people.” Brody was getting a little heated.
I rolled my eyes and was about to storm in there and tell the man to mind his own business and get out of my house. But then Sam spoke and I changed my mind.
“I understand Sherriff, but we are friends of Emily’s from a while back. We are just here to help her cope with everything that happened.” The sincerity in his voice struck me and made me blush. I never had someone say something like that.
