I woke up with a head ache and a little irritated spot on my bad arm. I opened my eyes to sunlight and squinted. I yawned instinctively and sat up on the back of the impala. I ran my hand against my face to feel the hot skin that had been laying on the leather interior. I looked around to see open fields around me. I stared out the front window to see a house with a large porch and a couple beat up cars next to it. It was a quaint stereotypical all-American house. I saw Cas and Sam standing with their backs to me on the porch. Dean was standing a stair down the porch with his side facing me. They were all looking at a man who was facing me.
The man was older with a short beard. He had a dirty ballcap and, what a surprise, he was sporting a plaid button down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. His face was twisted in a little rage. But I saw the way his face flashed between Sam and Dean’s faces. He looked at them with the love of a father. He was relieved they were okay but angry at the shitstorm they got into. I realized this man must be Bobby.
I opened the door and stumbled out of the car into the warm sun. My energy was still down and I felt a little shake in my knees. I looked up to see them staring over toward me. I shut the door and leaned on it as I gave them a smile and a wave. I sighed deeply and tried to walk off the car but I couldn’t without falling and embarrassing myself. So I just turned and leaned my back against it. I ran my hand through my hair and tried to breathe.
“Emily!” Dean called. “Come meet Bobby.”
I nodded. “Gimme a second to compose myself.” I called back and tried to get myself together. I had horrible dreams while I had slept. I dreampt that I was somewhere very white and calming, but I was suddenly ripped from it and thrown down to earth in a ball of something. Then I dreamed of a man who held his arms open to me and promised me the world. I got shivers just thinking about it. I don’t know what any of that meant but I was a little scared.
I finally pushed off the car, turned, and started for the house. They were already talking again as I approached. I walked up the stairs with some trouble but I kept a small smile. When I got up Cas moved to the right a little and let my join their small circle. I looked across and met Bobby’s eyes. He gave me a polite smile and held his hand out to me.
“Name’s Bobby.” He spoke with ease.
I held my hand out and shook his with a firm grasp. I liked the softness of his hands. I could tell that he was a good man. Actually, I could tell that he was the best man in this circle. Even compared to a flawless angel, this man was higher on the goodness scale.
“Emily.” I let my hand fall to my side as I kept his warm stare. “I have heard a lot of good things about you. It is a pleasure to meet you.”
He chuckled and gave Dean a side glance. “I have heard a lot about you too. I hope it isn’t all true.”
“I hope not either.” I whispered and unconsciously leaned toward Cas a little.
He seemed to notice. “Bobby, why don’t we go inside. I will just feel more comfortable with her in a very safe place. I don’t know how long it will be until they realize her presence.” Cas’ voice changed to one of authority but his respect for Bobby was still showing.
Bobby nodded and stepped back to open the door for us. “I made some burgers and fries for you. Thought you’d be hungry. Help yourselves, they’re in the kitchen.” I saw him glance at Dean and Sam and I knew he was happy to be taking care of them. These were the closest things he had to sons and he knew it.
