Dean felt her eyes on him as he watched the road ahead. She had said she didn’t want to get married and he didn’t know why it bothered him so much. He let it leave his mind as he turned the car into her driveway. Sam wasn’t outside and he wondered if he was waiting inside. He needed to talk to him. He needed to explain what was happening. He turned his eyes over to see Emily staring at her house through the windshield. She was in a moment of deep thought. He wondered if she was going to take back what she said. Maybe she would stay here and not go with them. But then he knew he was wrong.

“I am going to wait out here for Sam. You should go get packed. As soon as we can go, we are skipping town.” Dean muttered as he sat back in the seat and relaxed a little.

“Just don’t leave without me. I will hunt you down.” She chuckled and got out of the car. She closed the door without slamming it and started for her house.

He watched her make her way carefully up the stairs. She swayed nicely with each step. He watched how she held her injured arm close to her. He was mesmerized by the innocence in her walk. She was still healthy. Unlike Sam and himself who had battered bodies and kindled spirits. She was still ignorant enough to be innocent. And yet she killed her first thing last night. She didn’t look like it.

She opened her door and disappeared. But before she did she turned for a split second and checked to see if he was still sitting there. And Dean knew that everytime she looked back he would be there. He wanted to be there when she looked back.  Then he felt himself blush. He hated that. He reached forward and turned on the radio. Some Metallica came on and he relaxed some more. He took a deep breath and waited for Sam.

I stood in my room looking out my bedroom window. Dean and Sam were leaning against the car talking. It looked like Dean was trying to explain while Sam just nodded or shook his head. I never met two people who cared for each other more than those two brothers. I held my suitcase in my hand and just stared at them a moment. I didn’t know where I fit in there. I never had a family and I didn’t know what to do if I was given one. But I knew that I had to keep them together. They were the protectors of this world. I smiled and clutched my bag. And they wanted me to tag along for the ride.

As I walked out into the sun I turned to see my neighbor standing at the edge of her yard. She looked over me and her eyes hovered on the bandage around my arm. I took a deep breath and walked slightly toward her. I had to thank her for getting me help. A week ago I would’ve thought she would have just walked past me without a second thought if I was dying on the lawn.

“Thank you. I don’t know if I would be here right now if you didn’t get me help.” I kept eye contact and watched her carefully. But I put on my most polite smile.

She just nodded with a stern glance over my shoulder. “Are you really skipping town with those boys? They look like trouble.” She spoke with a condescending tone.

I ignored that because I realized this was the last time I would see her. “I am. They are the only friends I have and it is time that I go out and find my place in the world. I hope you have a good life.” I smiled one last time before turning. I didn’t expect anything in reply.

“You too.” She said almost too quietly for me to hear.

When I turned my head slightly I saw that she was already walking back to her house. I smiled and wondered if she really did care at all for me. If she watched over me but didn’t have the kindness to show it. I shook my head and walked to their car. Dean was leaning his chest against the driver’s side door watching me. Sam was standing by the passenger door with his hands in his pockets.

“Ready?” Sam asked with a cute little smile.

I nodded. “One question, if I join this team, do I have to wear seventy layers of clothes?” I cracked a smile.

Dean shook his head with a grin. “No, but it is awesome and it keeps you warm.”

Sam nodded. “Never know when you have to shed a blood stained shirt. It is nice to have one right underneath.”

I nodded shaking my head. “Great. This is my life now.” I opened the backseat door behind Sam and shoved my suitcase down at the feet on the seat beside me. their bags were also sitting on the seat beside me and on the floor. Mine fit pretty nicely.

“Only one bag?” Dean asked opening his door. “In my experience women carry four to five bags just for an overnight.”

I hopped into the seat behind Sam’s and looked over at Dean with a shrug. “What can I say? I am not like most women.”

Sam opened his door and got in as well. He turned slightly and gave me a smile. “Good. Cause you are going to be rooming with two brothers for a little while. I would feel bad for you if you were the princess type.”

Dean got in and they both shut their doors at the same time. I found that odd that they could do that. I shut my door and fumbled with the seat belt. “So where is the first stop on the road again?” I felt a little excited.

Dean started to car and looked over at Sam. “Yes, where is the next destination?”

“Oakland California.” Sam said with a little head nod. “Seems there was ten men who were brutally killed over the course of seven nights. I talked to a hunter from that area and he wants some back up. Thinks a big storm is brewing.”

“Have any ideas of what it is that is killing the men?” Dean asked as he pulled out of my driveway.

I watched out my window as we just drove so easily from my old life. I took a deep breath and held it as I turned and stared ahead. I watched the back of Sam and Dean’s head and thought of the life I was moving toward.

“He doesn’t know for sure. He thinks maybe it is demons.” Sam fumbled with some papers in the front seat.

I crossed my arms over my chest and relaxed back into the seat. It was comfortable enough to fall asleep. Dean punched a button on the dash and the Ramones blasted throughout the car. He turned it down so that he could still talk to Sam.
