Cas woke up feeling sore in his lower back. He sat up and yawned. He listened for the hum of the engine and was relieved to hear it purring all around him. He opened his eyes and looked over to see that Sam was sleeping ebside him. He had his head laying on the back of the seat and his mouth was open, making his breathing loud and melodious.
Castiel turned and looked up at Dean and Emily through his morning daze. Rubbing his eyes, he listened to them talk and chat like excited teenagers.
“I want Sam to be my best man.” Dean said as he pulled them around a sharp curve.
Emily nodded and paused a moment. “I would have never seen that coming. Actually I am surprised you didn’t ask Lucifer to be your best man.”
Dean play punched her in the arm and they both cracked up. “I was thinking about what Cas would do-“
“What will I do for what?” Cas asked in a rough morning voice and had to clear his throat.
Emily turned around in her seat and stared back at Cas. She gave him a wide grin and the spark in her eyes caught Cas off guard. It made himself smile at how purely happy she looked in that moment. He knew that part of it was that everything with the angels seemed miles behind them. They had won, and they were alive. It was time for them, himself included, to start fresh and with a clean outlook. He was ready to forget his old life and start a new one of hunting with the most important people in the world to him.
“I think we should tell you when Sam is up. Then you both will know.” She whispered and looked over at Sam. “I don’t want him to be mad if he is the last to know.”
“It’s his fault for sleeping like a sloth.” Dean groaned. “It is almost his turn to take over.”
“You still don’t trust me to drive?” Emily asked sweetly with a subtly seductive smile.
Cas grinned. “What about me, Dean?”
Dean let a low sound come from his throat. “Cas, you don’t even have a driver’s license and until you get lessons from me or Sam, there is no way in hell I am letting you drive my baby. Emily, you are prone to having seer visions that knock you from reality. Ezpecially since we don’t know exactly how much power God really did let you keep.”
His grin fell into a worrying frown. “God let you keep powers?”
Her eyes met his and she shrugged. Her hand came out and set on his, which was resting on his thigh. “She wanted me to protect you, Cas. She wanted me to protect everyone and her way to show that was to let me keep my supernatural sight.”
Cas felt a little sting in his side. Watching Emily’s sweet smile he realized that he was jealous of her. It was the first feeling of jealousy he ever had and he disliked it strongly. He wanted God to have given him a gift. He wanted to feel loved again. All he got as a hand on the cheek and a warm smile. Cas didn’t think it was enough to fill what God had taken from him.
“Good for you.” He whispered and looked over as Sam let out a low snore. “How long have we been in the car?”
“Not long but we can pull off if you want. It isn’t like we are in any hurries anymore.” Dean let out a deep sigh. He felt relieved to just be going home, with no strings attached. There was more to hunt, but that was for tomorrow and the day after that.
