NOT PART OF STORY: okay, well this hsa gotten pretty far in now, so if you have made it this far please oblige me with some of your thoughts on it. I think things are heating up... but please let me know if chapters are too long or too short. I like to keep them short so you you can stop periodically and not have to worry about being in the middle of a chapter. Enjoy.
“I didn’t hear you scream.” She spoke as Dean paced in front of her.
The hospital was crowded for a Wednesday night. Nurses and doctors ran around the two of them as they stood outside Sam’s room with their arms crossed over their chests and their eyes sizing each other up. Cas was waiting in the room right beside Sam, who was unconscious from the loss of blood.
“I screamed and screamed for you and Cas. How is it that I sat there in my brothers pile of blood for what felt like eternity because you refused to go into that house. We both know you are more powerful than the both of us put together.” Dean’s voice was raising so he quieted himself before doctors stopped to ask if there was a problem.
Her eyes drifted away from his as she ran her hand over her throat nervously. “I didn’t see any trouble. I honestly don’t know how it got that bad. I am sorry.” Her voice caught. She had seen the look on Dean’s face when they carried Sam to the car. She would never unsee the tears and the pure sorrow in his eyes. It was the first time that she ever physically hurt from someone else’s pain.
He sighed and took a deep breath. “No, it isn’t your fault. I just-I am really scared. Everything was going fine. We found a doll from the girl and it had these huge red eyes and a black smile. We thought that was it, so we burned it. Then this thing appears-it hit me in the chest and knocked me back against the wall. I was too late, when it clawed at Sam’s chest.” Dean closed his eyes and tried to make the images go away. “I shot it with the occult. It is dead and gone. Thing turned to ashes.”
“He is going to be fine.” Emily whispered with confidence. “It didn’t look too bad.”
Dean’s face was pale. IT worried Emily to see him like that. She reached out and set her hand on his arm. He looked down at the contact and smiled shortly by the sudden comfort. Emily squeezed his arm and peeked into the window of Sam’s room. Cas was over him. He had his hand out over Sam and she felt his frustration. It was then she realized that she might be able to heal… as she once had.
“I am going to call Bobby, and have him meet us here.” Dean whispered with more sorrow.
“Cas already did, I had him when you were talking to the doctor. He should be here as soon as he can.” But her voice was distracted and far in the distance. She let her hand fall from his arm as she walked to the door and peered in further.
Cas let his own hand fall down to his side. His shoulders hunched and Emily thought for a second that she saw him crying. But he turned and walked out of the room without a word or a blink of the eye. He walked past both Dean and Emily in a silence that was cold to those near him. He walked until he hit the end of the hall and then he turned and disappeared from them.
Emily looked back and focused on Sam’s quiet unconscious body. “You said that it clawed him? Where?”
“Right over his heart. I don’t know if it got that far down. But he passed out pretty quickly.” Dean stopped and set his hand over his eyes to try to physically ward all of that sorrow from him.
Emily walked into the room quietly. She shut the door behind her and turned. Dean was at the small window of the door. She knew he was reaching for the handle to join her. But before he could, she locked it. He raised an eyebrow at her and looked almost angry. But Emily turned and walked toward Sam. She heard the beepings from the machines. When she was close to his bed she looked down on serene Sam. His eyelids fluttered lightly. His hair was matted from blood and sticking up in every direction.
