Dean knocked on the hotel door with little energy. It had been a long night fighting those demons and he wanted to go in there and get some shut eye before they headed to Bobby’s. He wasn’t expecting to have trouble with Cas and Emily. He thought they would talk and get all the things straight that Emily was still wondering about. Sam leaned against the wall beside the door.

“Man, I am exhausted.” Sam sighed and ran his hand through his hair. “Lucifer is doing a great job of wearing us out.”

Dean nodded but didn’t seem to want to talk much. “No kidding.” He mumbled as he opened the door and walked into the cool dark hotel room. He flipped on the light as Sam walked around him into the room.

They both stopped in their tracks and stared at the bed. Emily and Cas were both asleep on the same bed. They were sitting with their backs on the headboard. Cas was slumped over on Emily and the side of his head was resting casually on her shoulder. Her head was tilted and laid softly on the top of his head. Dean looked and saw that Cas was holding a trash can to his chest loosely. Emily had a hand laid delicately on his thigh.

“What happened last night?” Sam asked softly still trying to think over any possible situation.

Dean looked over at the kitchen table and saw five empty bottles of scotch and whiskey from the fridge. He furrowed his eyebrows together. While they were out slaughtering demons these two were here getting wasted and throwing up.

“Looks like Emily and Cas are drinking buddies.” Dean pointed to the table for Sam before dropping his arm to his side. He didn’t feel in the mood to wake them up and heckle them. Instead he trudged over to the other bed beside theirs and fell flat on his chest. He rubbed his face into a pillow and groaned. “Can you turn the light off?”

Sam breathed out of his nose and looked over the three of them. They were all he had, aside from Bobby. He smiled and flicked the light. He didn’t move a second as he kept the image of all of them in his mind. He wouldn’t want anyone else as his friends. He wouldn’t want to spend his time with any other people. These three people made the hunting life livable. He walked over and fell onto the couch easily. He squished a pillow behind his head and closed his eyes for nap. In the morning he was ready to face whatever else came at them.

I woke up with a sore ache in my head. I felt something shift to my right. I opened my eyes and glanced over to see the morning light pouring into the hotel room. I looked down to see a head on my shoulder. I felt my hands on his pants and I could hear his slow breathing. I had a clear shot at seeing the waste basket he had clutched to last night. Cas could not hold liquor, that was for sure.

“What happened last night?” Came Sam’s voice from across the room.

I looked up at him. he was sitting on the couch with a laptop on his legs. The glow from the screen showed his face to me very well. I shrugged, but not enough to disrupt Cas. “We just had a few drinks. I didn’t even get a buzz. It really went to his head. I ended up being the babysitter. How did it go with you two?”

Sam smiled softly and shifted his eyes over toward the bed to my left. “Demons are dead and we are alive. Job well done.”

I looked over a moment to see Dean fast asleep and breathing heavily. His face was serene and he had a boyish charm. I yearned to reach over and run my hands through his hair. But I turned back to Sam. “So, when they wake up we are shipping off?”

Sam nodded. “I don’t know what Cas is doing, but we are going straight to Bobby’s. Only reason we are still here is because of utter exhaustion. There were a lot of demons.” He looked down at his screen with a sad look.

“It takes its toll.” I whispered. “I wish I could understand so I could tell you something wise and reassuring, but I don’t. I can only tell you that I appreciate what you two do.” He looked up at me with some surprise, but he looked pleased. I continued with a soft voice. I stared into his eyes and tried to channel my appreciation to him. “I assume you don’t get the thanks you deserve. I know that there is so much that you go through that is below what everyone else sees. The things you gave up and the things you battle inside… I just want to thank you. For doing the job that no one else would ever choose to do.”

Sam just stared at me a second without finding the words to respond. It was like he never expected to get anything like that.  He cleared his throat and looked back down at his screen a moment before composing himself and looking right into my eyes. “You’re welcome.” He said but he made the face of not thinking he was saying what he wanted to.

I nodded and looked down at Cas. I wanted to wrap my arms around him and protect him. He was like an innocent little child. I sighed and shifted a little closer to him instinctively. “You’re a good guy, Sam. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.”

“I will try not to.” He whispered, still trying to gain the words to tell me something.

I closed my eyes and rested my head on Cas’ head again. I took a deep breath and let it out with a smile. “Good.” I yawned. “I know that there is something a little dark following you around, something that happened to you and you cant let it go. I just want to warn you that it is going to eat you up inside. You just need to let it go. I cant force you, but please let it go.” I felt myself slip back into unconscious as Sam was about to say something.
