I took a deep breath and ran my hand through my hair. I watched Dean open the item in my mind. I was standing in front of him as his hand shook the rag off of the item. I was miles away, but as I looked into his eyes I felt more human. I had to be in his presence one last time to gain the strength to do this suicide mission. But when we both saw the item in his hands our hearts stopped.

“Holy shit.” Dean whispered softly. His finger carefully touched it as if it wasn’t really there.

It was the wedding ring his mother had worn the night she died. It was the ring John had given Mary and asked her to be his wife. I knew what it was because Dean knew what it was. I looked up at his eyes to see tears filling his eyes, but none of them ran loose. He took a deep breath and clenched his fist around it.

“One day.” He looked up and I thought for a moment that he could see me. But he turned from the room and started to walk out toward the car.

I stood there in my mind for a while after he was gone, I was starting to feel the streins of missing him. It was starting to weigh down on me. I blinked and I was standing in Bobby’s bunker. I turned and saw Cas curled up on a ball on one of the cots. Sam was laying on his back on the other one. Bobby’s ghost had to wondering somewhere because he wasn’t here. I walked over to Cas and sat beside him. I watched his eyes stare blankly into the cover in front of him.

I leaned over to him and kissed his forehead. I felt him shiver and I smiled softly. I sat back to see him looking over at Sam. Cas had a look of desperate soullessness that struck my heart. I watched his gaze and saw Sam start to stretch in his sleep.

“I love you guys more than you will ever know.” I whispered into the air that they weren’t breathing.

“Sam?” Cas’ voice was small but it struck the silence that had rung in my ears.

“What?” Sam mumbled in a daze.

“Do you think Emily is coming back?” His voice was absolutely heart wrenching and I knew immediately it was a bad decision for me to come back and see them, even if they couldn’t see me.

Sam paused. “Of course.” But his voice was unsure and I felt my chest collapse inward. I stood from the cot and walked over to Sam. I wanted to reach out but I saw the veins on my hand and I retracted myself. I couldn’t taint them. “Why wouldn’t she? She is family, and family comes first.”

Cas sighed. I closed my eyes and silence filled me. I opened them again to see I was standing in an open field. It was the one from my vision. But I knew that it wasn’t time. I just knew that I needed to be alone and collect myself. I needed to wash my doubts from me and get in charge of this. I sat on the grass and closed my eyes. I started to draw all my power together in me. I started to feel the burn of my power course through my veins.

Lucifer stood on the ground and took a deep breath. He grinned as he watched his sister sit down and relax her spirit. He watched her like a hawk as he prepared himself for this. He had been waiting for this since the plan had risen years upon years ago. He had heard of her falling and it all seemed to be destiny that he would win this. He watched her harness her energy. He was going to use it to his advantage, he was going to twist her until she broke. He smiled and closed his eyes. It was almost time for him to be the last one laughing.

Sam woke from bed to see his brother leaning over him. Dean held his finger against his own lips and used his hand to motion for them to leave the bunker. Sam stood in the near darkness and followed his brother. He glanced over to see Cas was sleeping perfectly in the bunk beside his with his back to them. When they were alone out in the basement hallway Dean reached into his pocket and held the ring out to Sam.

Sam just stared at it a moment without realizing what it was. He had been too young, but Dean had heard the story over and over as a small child. When he asked about it after Mary was killed, John would pretend like he didn’t know the story. So Dean looked at the ring in his hands as he told Sam about the story.

“This is mom’s wedding ring. Before she died, she used to tuck us into bed and tell us this story. There was a beautiful princess but she had a horrible secret that made every man run away from her. Her secret- she was an assassin, but she only killed evil people.” Dean paused with a light smile. “Then one day she met a man that she really fell for, so to keep him from running she lied to him about who she was. Until her evil father came down and chased the man away. But her prince, he found out her true life, and in an act of pure love, he made her a ring that repelled the evil men and took her as his wife.” Dean chuckled under his breath. “I thought it was a story… but it never was. Sammy, this ring is iron. It is the one item our mother cherished in this world.”

“Cute story.” Sam yawned. “But what does that-“

“It is a symbol of love, pure and simple. A ring to bind two people.” Dean clasped his hand around the ring and felt it’s cold metal chill his palm. “I am going to pull Emily from her spiral into becoming an emotionless angel again. I am going to put it on her.”

Sam just stared at his brother. “Dean, that sounds crazy.”

Dean nodded and sighed. “Gabriel gave it to me, this thing was supposedly burned in the fire. But it is hers, it is the exact same one from her hand, I remember it. And it is going to save Emily. I just know it.” He tucked the ring in his pocket and then grabbed hold of Sam’s shoulders. “It is happening soon. I need us to get all of our weapons and any strategies out.”

Sam stared into his brothers eyes and he felt butterflies in his stomach. “And when this is all over, you’re going to marry her?”

Dean squeezed his brother’s shoulder. “If we make it out of this alive, I plan on taking her to Vegas and getting hitched the day after. And we will be one big happy fucking family.” Dean didn’t realize how hard he was squeezing Sam until he saw him wince, and then he dropped his arms to his side.

Sam realized how much she meant to him. She was the first person outside of blood relation that took him as he was and loved him through all the flaws that he hated himself for. She was going to give her life for him, no one but Sam and their dad had done that before. She was his white light at the end of this hunter tunnel. Emily was the one thing in this world Dean had to himself and that he really loved. He could look into her eyes and see the darkness of the world melt away. Sam knew what he felt because that was what Jessica had been to him.

Sam smiled and nodded through his sleepy daze. “We’ll be ready.”
