Dean watched the door until he saw Emily walk by and he felt better. He breathed normally again. Then he saw Cas walking close behind her. He was looking at her with respect and Dean wondered what happened on Emily’s ‘walk’. When the door opened he saw even Sam turn to look. When they walked over Dean just scooted in and let Emily sit on the outside. She sat close to him and this time she was the one to press her leg to his. He smiled wider at that. Sam scooted in to let Cas sit across from Emily.
“Cas, how’d your errands go?” Sam asked turning to face him.
Cas shrugged. “Fine.”
Dean felt Emily’s hand on his thigh. “Cas found me wondering and I managed to talk him into coming to the diner and take a break from his little errands.”
Cas looked at Dean and Dean knew that Cas had been in trouble. It was his hunter instincts that told him so. He would have to confront him in private later. “Glad you joined us. We were planning on going on a job after this.” Dean turned to Emily. “We thought it would be good practice for you.”
Her smile grew wide and her excitement was pouring out into all of them. “That sounds great!”
Sam chuckled. “Let’s not talk about it yet. I just want a normal family breakfast.”
Emily looked over at him and her face fell. Dean set his hand on her and squeezed but her expression was still confused. “You want a normal family breakfast? I just came back from twenty years in hell.” Then her smile seemed to reappear. “And nothing sounds better than a normal family.”
Sam looked up at her under his bangs and smiled childishly. “Seen any good movies lately?”
Emily smiled wider and tilted her head. “Last good movie I saw was The Shining.”
Dean watched their game, which is what it looked like. They were trying to create lines that made them seem normal. He finally saw them both as little kids, trying to keep their innocence intact. And it almost made him more sad. The fact that Sammy never got these conversations. Emily, the foster child, most likely never had anyone to care for her the way they did. They both grew up alone and scared.
“That was a good film.” Sam admitted and sat back. “Favorite part?”
Emily turned and gave me a wink. Then in a low screetchy voice, almost identical to young Danny Torrance from the film, she whispered, “REDRUM.” Then she picked up her butter knife and held it up toward Sam with a crazy stare. “REDRUM.”
Sam burst out in laughter. Dean knew then how much Sammy had missed his younger sister. It was the laughter she brought that had been missing these past few months. It was the lack of her smile that seemed to wear on both of them.
“Redrum?” Cas asked confused. “I am not familiar with that word.”
“It spells murder backwards.” Dean said softly.
Emily turned and raised an eyebrow at me. “And what is your favorite part of the movie, Mr. Dean Winchester?”
Dean started to forget about the apocalypse and the demons as he thought back to the movie. The game they were playing was working, the job was starting to fade in their minds for the moment. Dean contorted his face into a large wide Nicholson smile and looked down at Emily like a maniac. “HEEEREEE’S JOHNNYYYY!” His voice was a whisper but it still roared across the table.
