Shawn:

🌸2 days later🌸

Today our little girl can be out of her birth box and Maya and I will be holding her for the first time, ever.

Maya still isn't stable enough to go home, and their still checking up on her, but if all goes well, she can leave on Friday. Or even today.

"Mr. Mendes." Doctor Reece called me and I quickly pecked Maya's cheek as I walked out to him. "Hi." I shook his hand and walked with him down the hall.

"How's Maya?" He asked and I smiled, putting my hands in my pockets. "She's doing okay. The nurses say that if all goes well she can be booked out by Friday. She's asleep now, which is good because she struggled the previous nights." I said and he nodded with a satisfied smile on his face.

"But this isn't about Maya right?" I asked and his reassuring smile faded as he shook his head. "No. This is about Skyler. She's extremely stable now and you can get to hold her today. But as she grows up, because she's born so early and because of some problems we had during the surgery she has some permanent damage done to her lungs and therefore she won't be able to participate in any strong breathing sports like swimming, soccer and those things. With ice hockey, dance, track running and those she can do because she can regulate her breathing." He said and I nodded, taking in all the information about my baby girl.

I knew there would've been consequences with the early birth and her being delivered dead. But it's not that harsh. I'm just thankful it wasn't permanent damage to the brain that maybe could've affected her speaking, thinking or even her actions.

"Other than that, can Maya go home today or does she still need to stay?" I asked and he smiled again. "I'm happy to say that both your girls can go home." He chuckled and I just laughed in relief, shaking his hand and giving him a quick hug, thanking him for taking so good care of my family.

"Well then. That's all from my side, do you have any other questions?" He asked as we came to a stop at the reception. I thought for a moment but eventually shook my head, only thanking him again.

"Okay great. A nurse will come to check on both her and Skyler before they can be signed out. Best of luck to you all." He said, shaking my hand before I walked off back to Maya in her room.

As I walked in I saw her sat up in the bed with Skyler in her arms. She was smiling down at her, holding her little hand in hers as Skyler just giggled.

I saw her looking over to me as she smiled. "Shawn. Come here." She said and I walked in, standing beside her as I looked at my girl. This will be the first time I hold her in my arms.

"Here." She said softly, handing her to me. The minute I held her in my arms, I felt the tear gliding down my cheek. This is indescribable and so surreal.

Skyler locked her eyes on mine, just staring at me for a moment before she started smiling big, her gums showing, making my laugh as she giggles.
She placed her hand doen on my cheek as I leaned down, pecking her forehead.

That was the moment.

The moment I knew this will be the next love of my life. She already is and I'm already loving her so much that it hurts. Nothing can describe this bond.

"She's so beautiful." I laughed, sitting down next to Maya on her bed. "I can't wait to take her home." She said and I handed her back to her.

As I sat down next to Maya she cupped my cheek, wiping away my tear and pecking my lips as we smiled, looking down at Skyler.

Then I remembered the news from Doctor Reece.

"I need to tell you what Doctor Reece said. He said Skyler won't be able to participate in tough sports because there's some permanent damage done to one of her lungs. But she'll be okay. The rest of her is fine." I said and she looked at me with big eyes before looking down at Skyler again.

"Why do I feel like this is all my fault?" She whispered, probably not wanting me to hear it but I did. "Hey, Maya. This is not your fault. This could've happened to anyone. But she's okay. Look at her, she's smiling and laughing. She's more than okay." I said, taking her hand in mine.

She smiled faintly at me, pecking my lips and rested back in the bed again as I laid down beside her, looking at Skyler resting on her chest.

-

A while later the nurse came in and did her check on both Maya and Skyler. "She's stable and Maya, you're stable as well but you need to keep your scar clean and dry. It's still not healed that well but you're allowed to go home." She said and I smiled of excitement as I get to take them home.

We packed up her things, got Skyler's things and medication from the front before we got in the car and drove home.

I can't wait to show Skyler her new room and see how she reacts once she's here.

"Maya. Baby we're home." I said, lightly shaking her awake and her eyes slowly fluttered open. A small smile creeing on her face as she turned to look at our daughter in the back.

"We're home baby girl." She said, and Skyler just giggled, kicking around in her chair. For a newborn she has loads of energy and even doctor Reece said we'll have our hands full with her. Because if a newborn has this much energy at the age of almost just a few days, she'll be a busy body.

I look forward too it though.

Seeing my girl growing up, but I don't want the time to fly by that fast.
