Maya:
When we arrived at Skyler's school for her soccer game, I was feeling the nerves fluttering round in my tummy.
Both about the Championships, and my girl.
I don't have a good feeling, but yet I trust and believe things will be okay.. right?
"Shawn I don't know about this." I said as she ran off to her team. "I'm not sure about this either. But if she enjoys it we need to support her." He said and I nodded, feeling him taking my hand in his and intertwining our fingers.
We walked over to the pavilion and sat down in between the loads of parents. Shawn and I are the youngest.
"Do you feel weird as wel to sit here between all these people?" He whispered to me and I nodded as I chuckled, feeling him pecking my cheek and then laying his eyes on his little girl again.
Even though Shawn and I are married for a few years now, have a daughter and still continue with the work we have, him doing tours and me constantly being at my studio. We find the time for each other and the family.
We're still like we used to be, before getting married. I still love him the same, even more. But we still do the goofy things we did like when we were teenagers.
And I hope that, that won't change anytime soon.
The game started and my legs and hands were already shaking. "Calm down baby, I bet everything will be okay." Shawn said, giving my hand a reassuring squeeze.
I just looked over at him, hoping he's right about this because I can't lose my little girl.I've lost enough in this life and Shawn and Skyler will not be one of them.
She sat on the bench for the first half, as the team was two points behind. "You think they will put her in?" I asked nervously as I scooted closer to Shawn. "They have to. She's part of the team." He said, placing his hand down on my thigh and looking at Skyler.
I held on to his arm, still nervouse about what will happen when she starts to play.
"Okay okay okay. They put her on. She's on the field." He said excitedly and I st up, looking as she jogged out onto the field. "Go Sky!" I yelled, cheering along as the team started playing the second half.
"Common Sky. You can do this." Shawn said and she looked over to us. We waved at her and Shawn started cheering, making her smile grow only bigger.
You can see her two missing teeth all the way from the pavilion mext to the field.
The whistle blew, and she started playing.
Running around at full speed as she chansed the ball. "Yes! Go Skyler! Common my girl!" Shawn and I cheated as she got the ball, running towards the goal box."YES!" We all jumped up, clapping and cheering as she scored the goal for the team. Putting them in the lead.
She immediately turned and looked at us. "Way to go my girl! Yes!" Shawn yelled at her and I cheered along."She's so good!" Shawn smiled.
But then, worlds crumbled to pieces as I watched her stumbling to the sides, holding her hand over her chest.
She can't breath.
They kept on playing till the coach ran on the field and they blew the end whistle.
Game over.
"Skyler!" I yelled, tears in my eyes as my heart pounded right out of my chest.
You know like in the movies, when something bad happens or someone got hurt and everything moves in slow motion.
That's exactly how things played in my mind right now. Both me and Shawn and I jumping up from the seats and running down onto the field. "Skyler!" He yelled, the panic, fear and sadness all audible in his voice.
When we got to her she was laying on the ground, gasping for air. "Sky. Sky, baby you need to sit up." Shawn said and I grabbed the spare oxygen pump from my bag, handing it to him as he helped her sit up.
I immediately called and ambulance. She needs to get better and more air than this.
I started crying as I saw the fear in her eyes, not knowing what to do.Shawn continued pumping air to her lungs with the spare pump, till the ambulance arrived and they took her away.
"You said everything will be okay!" I yelled at him as we got in the car, rushing after the ambulance to the hospital. "How was I supposed to know this will happen Maya! You knew there was a risk! This is not my fault!" He yelled back. "I know! I know! I just need to balme someone for this!" I said, running my hands through my hair.
"Yeah and obviously that's me!" He yelled back. "Can we not!" He said, stopping at the hospital and we jumped out. "Skyler is in the hospital! This is not time for blaming or arguing because there is no reason for it!"
He immediately grabbed onto my hand as we ran inside as they pushed her in."Sky! Hey hey hey. Baby you're going to be okay." He said, walking beside her as they push her down the halls to a room. She was crying, as she still gasped for air. "Daddy I'm scared." She cried out. But speaking only makes it worse.
"Sshh darling. Don't say anything, you'll only struggle more." I said and sa the doctors starting to connect the oxygen to her.
Shawn walked over to me as we stepped back from the bed, letting the doctors do their work. "She'll be okay." He said and I hugged him, crying i to his chest.
I felt him also shaking and his chest moving as he cried as well."She needs to stop playing. Or we need to find a way that this can't happen." I said and he just nodded.
He's crying as he looks at her.
Things need to get better.
