I tapped my nails on the worktop as I waited. The house was pretty spacious, but quite cute at the same time. Everything was set up nearly and color co-ordinates. "Ah found it." Pam stood up and passed me a dish. Jake came running downstairs. "You alright?" He smirked. I felt my cheeks go pink a little. "Yeah you?" He nodded as he swigged from a bottle of water. Pam chuckled to herself at our awkwardness. "Right I better to head to work." She said walking away. "Make sure you lock up Jake." She winked. He rolled his eyes embarrassed. The front door closed and he hopped onto the workout. "I better go." I mumbled. "You're coming to the party tonight right? The start of summer has begun Y/N, it results in mass celebrations." He said casually. "Yeah...I mean I..." I stuttered nervously. "Please come." He smiled, his eyes were fixed on mine. "Yeah okay I will." I nodded. "Thanks for the dish." I said.
I walked back across the road and Mum opened the door. "You took a while." She winked snatching the dish from my hands. I looked to my nails and picked at the acrylic plastic. "Nothing happened, he just made sure I was going tonight." I said, kicking my trainers off. "I'm going to get ready, send Amber up when she gets here." I huffed.
Jake and I were always friends, we lived across the road from each other since we were very young. His Mum and my Mum were best-friends. I spent many summers abroad with the Paul's, Christmas Days with them and we had lived in each others pockets up until about 8 months ago. After I drunken kiss, I professed to Jake I loved him. Then, he went out that day and got a girlfriend. We instantly drifted and I'd lost my closest friend. I still spent time with Logan, but things were awkward with me and Jake. In the last 2 weeks, my Mum has deliberately made me go over to 'see Pam' with her, forcing me and Jake to hash things out. But, he found excuses he used wrestling, basketball or homework as an excuse to leave the house as soon as we got there. Our Mum's always had the dream Jake and I would end up together.
Both Amber and I were ready a little later than expected, I added my jewelry to my simple outfit. Instead of my big glasses I had my contacts in, super glam makeup, bouncy curls in my hair and was wearing a black jumpsuit that ended a little above my knee, a loose kimono thing and big wedged heels. "Beautiful." Amber grinned as we snapped a gazillion pictures.
We arrived and it was loud. The whole year was crammed into his house. "Y/N!" I heard my name being shouted, I spun around to see Logan. He hugged me tightly, before leaning into my ear. "I think Jake's in the garden- something about needing to speak to you..?" He shrugged, before I had the chance to question him he'd gone off with a large group of girls. Amber looked at me. "Go." She said nudging me as her boyfriend Chance walked towards her. "Heya." He said to me. "Hey." I called back, pushing through the crowd to the garden. I saw Jake, I had grabbed a drink on the way, so I didn't stand out like a sore thumb. He was with the basketball team. "Y/NNNNNNNNN!" Anthony shouted, grabbing me and wrapping his arms around me. The rest of the basketball team jeered at Jake and his cheeks went pink. Anthony let go of me and kissed my forehead. "She's an angel Jake." He shouted again, before they all ran inside to re-fill their drinks. "Logan said you wanted to talk..." I started, he nodded- biting down hard on his lip. "I wanted to tell you, before your Mum does." Any dream I had of him professing his love to me were instantly shattered. "Go on." I said, swallowing my tears and sipping through my straw.
He shifted uncomfortably and bit the inside of his mouth. "What is it Jake?" I asked, super concerned. His eyes filled with tears, I reached out and he held my hand. "I'm in love with you." He blurted, my eyes blurred. "What?" I asked, as he took a deep breath. "I'm in love with you and have been since that kiss. I was scared to tell you that I never had a girlfriend before, I've always lied about it." He said. I felt so relieved Jake felt the same way, but I felt awkward. "Why has it taken you this long? If you were scared...you still could've told me Jake. You left me thinking it was a one sided thing for what seems like forever. You wrecked our friendship, because you were scared to love me...?" I trailed off looking to the ground as my eyes started to sting. I wiped my eye gently with my nails. "I don't know, I was just overwhelmed. I've never been in love before.." I was dumbstruck, lost for words. "I need...I..." I stuttered, racing away. I pushed my way through the house and out the front door. My chest was tight as I clenched my fists. I took a few deep breaths and closed my eyes. Letting my body to fall to the ground. My voice was being shouted, then I heard footsteps. A pair of strong arms lifted me up, carried me bridal style up to one of the rooms.
"Hey you're okay. I'm so sorry." Jake comforting voice held me tightly. He rocked me back and forth and I snuggled into him. After he'd calmed me down, I looked up at him. "I'm game if you are." I smiled breathlessly. "I'm game." He smirked, he leant forward and we kissed. It was electric and I knew Jake was the one.
