As my eyes fluttered open to a relaxing breeze and a beautiful view, my ears were met by the cutest of noises. I didn't turn my head just yet, instead, I pretended I was still sleeping so that I got to hear this sound for just a little longer. It was only quiet, but it was such a lovely thing to be able to wake up to.
"Lights will guide you home, and ignite your bones..." he sung quietly along to the radio, making me have to force myself to not smile.
I could feel the warmth of the heat as the side of my face stuck to the leather padding of the car seat, my right eye opening but my left remaining closed so that Louis didn't realize I was awake and the sound of his voice disappear. My eyes were staring at the bluest of oceans, a long stretch of golden sand that continued for miles, along with a clear blanket of pale blue sky. I inhaled that familiar scent of the salty water mixed in with the cool air, allowing it to pass straight through my lungs and exit through my nose. Instantly, I knew I was back in my beloved Santa Barbara.
When the song had come to an end and Louis' voice became something I had heard instead of something I was hearing, my head slowly turned to face him. I caught his dark eyes instantly. They were warm and inviting, making me wish I could just crawl onto his lap right now and fall back to sleep to the sound of his beating heart. His lips curled into a sweet smile, while his eyes wandered to the different features of my face for just a few seconds, before his attention returned back to the road.
"Did we lose them?" My croaky voice asks, a hand removing the hair that has stuck to the side of my face as I have been sleeping.
"No, well, we got stuck at a red light just before we entered Santa Barbara but we're not far behind," he says in response.
I reach my hand across our seats so that my fingers can firmly link with his, while my head relaxes back against the seat. We had been driving now, for what I can imagine to be around an hour and a half, though I had fallen asleep around fifteen minutes after getting into the car. We were all taking a visit to Santa Barbara to have dinner at my father's sister's, my Aunt Diane's, house, along with my dad's parents. My mom and dad were in the car somewhere in front with Lucas.
"I see why you talk about this place so much," Louis grins, looking to his left at the buildings passing us by.
"I'll take you onto the beach later, it's really something special there."
Shortly after, we pulled up outside the brown panelled house belonging to Diane. The last time I remember us all being together, though that was including the Hudson's/Perry's too, was Thanksgiving last year. That felt like lifetimes ago.
I climbed out of the car, seeing my parents already greeting Diane at her front door, my mom holding a bottle of expensive wine in her hand, whereas all my dad had in his hands was a curly haired little boy that was, for some reason, giggling uncontrollably.
They all looked in our direction at the sound of our car doors closing shut. I had only just stood myself up properly, when the feel of a hand on my lower back became present.
"Should I be nervous?" Louis whispers into my ear discreetly, as the both of us begin approaching the house and my awaiting family.
"No, sweets," I smile up at him, "Diane's lovely."
His hand doesn't leave my lower back whilst we walk across the freshly cut, green grass and down the path leading to the large double doors that would lead us into Diane's home.
I could see her greeting me with a smile, to which I happily returned, clutching my phone and purse in one hand.
"Sammie, Sammie, Sammie," is the first thing I hear being cheered by the over excited little boy I call my baby brother. He bounces up and down in my dad's arms.
