My knees are fidgeting beneath me, as I sit in a blue hospital chair beside Shannon, waiting for the doctors to finish putting Sammie into the intensive care unit. My mind is everywhere, the most awful things running through my head and I just don't know what to do with myself.
"Have you called Oliver?" Shannon asks me, resting her head tiredly on my shoulder. It was now turning 10pm and both of us had been sat in these same chairs for the past two hours. The doctors had found some complications when her scan results came back, which took longer for them to send her up to the intensive care unit, meaning I still hadn't been able to see her.
"I called him before when you were in the bathroom," I answer, resting my chin onto my hand.
"What did he say?"
I turn to look at Shannon, "answer phone." Then giving her a shrug. Oliver wasn't first on my priority list right now.
"Is Tamara alright with Lucas?"
I nod, feeling grateful that Tamara had willingly offered to look after Lucas for as long as I need her to. "Yeah. I called and she said he'd just gone to sleep, so he's fine."
I noticed how flat and emotionless my voice was. I was just staring straight into space, not even having the strength to hold up my own head because I was that tired and worn out.
I sighed as I sat back in my chair. I could hear the faint sounds of the doctors talking in Sammie's room, them moving around, but I couldn't see what was going on because the blinds were closed. Every minute was just painful. I needed to be in there holding her hand, telling her I love her, letting her know her mommy wasn't leaving her side.
I look up when I feel the presence of someone in front me. My eyes were hopeful thinking it was a doctor, but it wasn't.
"Hiya sweetie, are you okay?" I say to Louis.
"Yeah...t-thanks." He hands out a cardboard tray which has two cups of coffee sat inside. "I got you both a coffee. Thought it might wake yous up a little."
I appreciate him being so nice to us, and even staying all this time. He'd made the others leave earlier, telling them that he would call them if there were any changes, and I felt like I should tell him the same. He was just a kid really. After the traumatic day he'd had, he needed sleep.
"Thank you, Louis. You know, you should go back to campus and get some sleep. I really do appreciate you being here all this time, and looking out for Sammie today. I've got your number from when you called me earlier, so I'll keep you up to date in everything."
"Will you let me know if anything happens during the night."
I smile assuringly, "I will."
Louis nods, turning away to leave the hospital. He drops his head slightly, a yawn escaping his lips as he almost has to drag his body down the corridor. I definitely feel sorry for him.
"Katy, you don't mind if I come back tomorrow, do you?" He asks.
I look back up, "of course not. I'll see you in the morning."
After Louis had left, I just sat back in my seat, starting to feel impatient at the fact I had been in this hospital for almost three hours and I still hadn't been able to see my daughter. I tapped my foot against the ground, staring ahead at the room that Sammie lay in.
My eyes became heavy, but the more I pushed them open, the more they closed shut. After a couple of minutes, I decided to stop fighting my tiredness and close my eyes. My head fell into the palm of my hand as my body drifted off into a deep sleep.
