Jane felt sick when she woke up for church that morning. She knew today had to be the day, she could not delay the truth any longer.
She'd been up half the night thinking about what to do, and she came to the terrible conclusion that it was not enough just to tell her mother and father the truth.
She had become aware of something about her family's values that brought her to an uncomfortable realization: She did not trust her parents. She knew that whatever she told them- if even believed- would be covered up.
The only thing to do, then, was to bring the truth into the light in a very public way, so that they could no longer deny it in front of the Cuthberts.
Her own sense of right and wrong meant she had to draw a line between herself and her family, and she placed herself on the other side of it.
They would cover up wrongdoing to save face.
She would not.
