His father had dozed off, and Gilbert was reading Anne's story in front of the fire.
He read The Tale of Persephone and the Dragon first with surprise, then with amusement, and finally with admiration. She really had potential as a writer, and her story was good enough to be published, he thought.
He remembered what Anne had said about letters: "Once someone has your words written down, they get to keep a little piece of you forever."
He folded the paper and held it to his chest for a second, gazing into the fire and feeling warm.
