"Thank you, Melia," I said as She handed me the microphone. I pulled her in for a quick hug, then pulled back and looked back at what felt like a thousand pair of eyes looking at me.
I cleared my throat, glanced down to Jamie, took a breath, then looked to Julian. "Okay," I said slowly. I shot him a smile and reached up to loosen my tie. "Jules... Since you asked me to be your best man, I've been trying to think of all the shit to say.
"At first, I thought of how I should embarrass you... Maybe I'd talk about that one time where you decided skinny dipping in 45 degree weather was a good idea..." Everyone began laughing; Penny was laughing the hardest. Jules shook his head and said something to her, before looking back up at me.
"That was when I realized that this should probably be about you and your journey with Pen... God," I chuckled and shook my head playfully. "I thought you were nuts when you first told me about her. You were late to team meetings... and you came running into the locker room with a look on your face... one that I'd never seen on you before. I just remember giving you a look like 'what the fuck happened to you'...
"It was later that day that you said you'd met a girl... At first I didn't believe you... then you started talking about her 'amazing accent and amazing eyes'... and that was when I realized the look on your face was love... It was a look you never had with Ella or Adriana. I still remember when we met her... we were all in shock that she was actually into you," I said, then looked to Pen. "And we still don't know why, Pen."
Everyone began to laugh. As Penny shook her head, she shrugged. "Sometimes I wonder that too, Danny Boy!"
I grinned and shook my head. "I'm glad you two have stuck together. When Pen moved back to England, I swear Jules was going to die. He just sat around practically depressed... it was a side I'd never seen of him. And I told him he needed to do something about how he was feeling... that's when he got the crazy idea of going all the way to England to find her... the next thing I knew, was we were crammed on a plane for god knows how long on our way to Penny...
"Jules, man... we've been through so much. I-I was almost jealous of you two... I always wanted what you two had... I thought I had that... and things didn't work out," I shook my head, then glanced over at Olivia, who was sitting there with a blank look on her face... Then I looked to Jamie... Those big brown eyes were looking up at me as she clutched her phone in her hand. "I thought I'd never find love again... Then I met Jamie... Thanks to you two. Then I lost her... I was in such a bad place for so long... but you... both you and Pen stuck with me. I am so thankful for that."
I looked down at my feet, took a breath, then looked back up at Julian. "Dude, you and Pen... You two have taught me so much," I let out a shaky sigh. "You've taught me to love... You've showed me that I've got the best friends in the world... and Jesus... I learned that I can actually go to you for help..." I furrowed my eyebrows and shook my head. "I never thought I'd say that."
Julian shook his head and began laughing. "I never thought I'd hear that from anyone," he called out.
I shook my head as I felt the pressure building behind my eyes, and my nose get stuffy. "Man, I love you. You're my best friend, and I'm so fucking thankful for that. After everything that we have been through... I-I..." I leaned down to grab my whiskey and coke. I took a quick sip, then stood straight again as tears began to pull from my eyes. "We're bros, And I wouldn't have it any other way. You and Pen are perfect... I'm so glad that I'm apart of your big day. You both are..." More tears pulled from my eyes and everyone became blurry.
"You both are my best friends... and I can't thank you enough. I wish the both of you the best in your future endeavors and I cannot wait until there's a little Penny running around... God," I mumbled through tears. "I hope there's no little Jules! It'd be like the Tasmanian Devil runnin' around... I couldn't deal with that. I just— I love you guys so much. Now that you're married don't forget about the rest of us... you have to take a break from the bedroom," I told them.
All of the sudden Jules was up next to me, pulling the microphone from my hand, then wrapping his arms around me as he cried a bit too. "I love ya man. Thank you. You're the best best man anyone could ask for." He pulled back, his blue eyes looking back at me. "Now I'm cutting you off before you say anything stupid. Get over to your woman."
I wiped my tears away and nodded. "Thanks Jules," I whispered. "You're the best, man."
"Love you bro... And ease up on the alcohol."
** Jamie's POV **
I smiled as Danny slowly made his way over to the table. "That was a wonderful speech," I told him as he sat down.
He put his drink down and smiled at me. "Thank you. It wasn't too bad, was it," he asked, his swollen eyes looking back at me. "I started to ramble."
I reached over and grabbed his hand. "Of course it wasn't bad, Danny," I said as so placed a kiss on his cheek. "It was great. And you getting emotional about your best friend only shows you care... And that you're a little drunk right now," I told him with a giggle.
His hand tightened in mine as he nodded. "Just a little. Ugh... Babe... come here," he mumbled as he moved to pull me into his lap.
I leaned back in his warm arms as his lips met my neck. "I cannot wait to get outta here," he growled. "The fun won't stop after the reception."
I giggled and shook my head. "I can tell," I replied as I grinded down on him a bit.
"You'll be the death of me," he mumbled as his teeth found my earlobe.
I leaned back in his arms a little further and shook my head. "I probably will be," I giggled. "But later tonight. Pen is going to throw the bouquet soon."
His arms tightened around me as he leaned us forward a bit, so his chin could rest on my shoulder. "I love you," he whispered as his stubbly cheek tickled my neck.
I put my hand on top of his and let out a content sigh. "I love you too, Danny," I replied. This right here would never get old--ever. I loved hearing those words out of his mouth... And I loved being in his arms. It left like a safe haven to me.
Within the next half hour or so, all of the speeches ended, and they decided it was time for Pen to throw the bouquet. All of us woman moved over to the dance floor and patiently waited for Penny to throw it back to us. I was wedged between Amelia and Nicki as Pen wound up her throw.
"Oh! There she goes! She's gonna throw it," Nicki squealed as Penny brought it up and let go of it-- letting it fly through the air.
It was practically coming right for me, so I put my hands up in front of my face-- My reflexes caused me to shy away from it. Before I could remember that I was suppose to catch it, I was shoved out of the way by Amelia, Nicki and then Olivia.
My eyes went wide as I noticed Amelia was the one who caught it. I felt a ping of regret in my heart as I watched her celebrate-- that should've been my. I should have tried harder-- I should have actually tried.
I tried not to show my disappointment as I made my way back toward Danny.
