She looked so beautiful. I felt like I was in a dream. If it wasn't for the cast on my arm and the pain coming from the healing bone, I wouldn't have thought the last few weeks had happened. Or the last two months. Since the moment she'd walked into my life, it had been different. Better. And I couldn't wait to spend the rest of my days with my wife.
We'd exchanged the generic vows and I added another ring to the engagement ring I'd only put on her finger an hour ago. I bought myself a simple band that she put on my finger. And then we kissed as man and wife.
'I love you.' She whispered, our foreheads together. I couldn't stop smiling. I couldn't control the feeling of absolute joy filling me up. Our witnesses clapped, but there was no confetti, no crying parents, there would be no drunken uncles at a reception. It was just us and it was perfect.
Once we arrived home, Lily exhausted by the days events and her first day out of hospital, we threw open the large windows to the September sunshine, pulled the chairs in front and sat in our wedding outfits eating pizza and drinking beer. I kept glancing over at her and I couldn't stop smiling.
'Cheers, Mrs Smith.' I said to her, holding up my glass bottle. She grinned and clinked hers against mine.
'Thanks, Mr Smith.'
'So, honeymoon. Where are we going?'
'Gosh, I don't know. I don't have a passport, remember.'
'Thats fine. It doesn't have to be some exotic place. How about a week at theme parks? Thorpe Park, Alton Towers?' I suggested. I saw her eyes light up.
'Yes. That's the best idea you've ever had.'
'Better than getting married?'
'Yep. And that's why I married you.' She joked, referring to my earlier comment about her organising skills. 'I have to wear this dress on the rides though.'
'Of course. Maybe we should wait a few weeks though, you had major surgery not long ago.'
'True.' She sighed, and rested her head on my shoulder with a yawn. 'I've had the best day of my life. Thank you. Thank you for everything.'
I kissed the top of her head, closing my eyes and staying there for a long time.
'Me too.'
