Part 6
Flames were devouring my house.
Just this morning, it was whole and intact, but now it was aflame.
People who recognized me ran towards me.
I couldn't hear them talking to me.
My neighbors shifted their feet against the ground anxiously.
The fire department couldn't reach our my house because the access-way was blocked.
I was frozen in place.
Summer had ended.
The sky was blue and the air was crisp with the first days of fall.
I didn't know what to do.
I didn't know what to think.
I certainly didn't know what to feel, either.
The house collapsed with a loud crash.
My mother.
The house backed nothing more than a lit rubbish heat.
It was completely enveloped in the unruly flames.
The roof.
The pillars.
The walls.
My room.
They all collapsed one by one like poorly made sandcastles.
I could do nothing but stare at the sight.
My eyes were empty of light, despite the fire.
People rushed past me.
The fire department finally arrived.
"Is someone in there?"
Someone had grabbed my shoulder.
There was a panicked urgency in her eyes when I finally looked at her.
She shook my shoulder hard.
"Is your mom in there?"
"There's no one," I replied.
"What do you mean?"
It was one of the neighbor's wives this time.
"What happened to your mom? Where is she?"
"There's no one in the house."
I had no idea what I was saying.
More people rushed past me to try and put out the fire.
I stood there, unable to say a word, or answer a single question
It must've been the shock.
