After Returning from the Sea
Part 3I quickly walked out Jungkook's hospital room. Tears welled up in my eyes. It was hard to see Jungkook pretend like he was alright. I only heard about Jungkook's accident that afternoon.
The burger joint was packed with people taking shelter from the rain. Some of them were Jungkook's classmates.
"Where's Jungkook? He hasn't been at school lately." I'd asked his classmates a thousand times.
"He was in an accident."
I hadn't heard from anyone else after we'd gone to the sea. I had to ask Jungkook's friends. But I never expected this as an answer.
"An accident? Is he hurt badly?" I'd asked.
"We don't really know. He's been gone for almost three weeks now."
I'd called Jungkook immediately. When he didn't answer I left a message on our group telling the rest about the situation.
Did the accident happen the night we'd all gone back home?
A while later I checked the group. No one had even read the message yet. Did they not care anymore? Were 'we' fair weather friends? Would they only be around when things were easy?
I was mad with myself for not calling Jungkook earlier. I should've gone back home with him that night. Maybe he wouldn't have gotten into that accident if I'd been with him. He was the youngest in our group. He was just a student. He didn't deserve this.
I paced up and down the hospital hallway to collect myself. Jungkook clearly wasn't fine. He was so pale.
Four of the others still hadn't checked my text yet. I typed another message out and sent it: this is disappointing.
"You? Dancing?" Jimin and Jungkook were talking about the dance crew.
"You're a good dancer. We should all go see you sometime," Jungkook said.
Taehyung called me then.
"What have you been doing? Why didn't you read my message earlier?" I asked the minute I picked up. I tried really hard to sound angrier than I was.
Taehyung talked then. His voice was rough. He'd been crying.
