After Returning from the Sea
Part 4
"How's Jungkook?"
That's all I could say.
I wrapped up my shift at the convenience store and stepped into the street. It had rained a few hours ago and puddles littered the street.
I felt my throat close up. My eyes welled up with tears. Hoseok was with Jungkook. Jungkook looked better than he'd thought from what he'd told me over the phone. I crouched down on the sidewalk, my phone to my ear.
Hoseok passed the phone to Jungkook.
"I'm okay."
Whatever convincing Jungkook was trying to do wasn't working on me this time.
"How about you?"
"Worry about yourself," I replied.
Jungkook laughed in return before I could say anything else.
"I'm on my way to the hospital guys."
With that said I made it to the hospital in no time and raced up the stairs. I couldn't wait for the elevator. I darted down the hallway and got to Jungkook's room. I froze in place just as I was about to go in.
I heard voices from inside. Namjoon and Seokjin were there. I stepped away from the room. I didn't even realize I was doing it. I couldn't keep my word. I couldn't see Jungkook today.
"I haven't changed," I heard Namjoon say.
It was true. Namjoon was just living his life as he did before. I dropped down on a bench in the hallway. People walked by. Some were crying.
Like Namjoon, I hadn't changed either. My daily routine was always between being at home and working at the convenience store. Dad was still drinking. He caused trouble every now and then.
One thing changed though.
The nightmares I had stopped. Yoongi dying, Jungkook falling, Hoseok mourning...
The night after we'd fought on the beach the nightmare stopped.
Instead of that terrible nightmare , another dream took its place.
Seokjin with tears running down his cheeks. Blue flower petals blown across the street. Some were covered in blood.
As I sat in the hallway I saw the elevator approach our floor. I looked back at Jungkook's room.
I wasn't ready to meet Seokjin and Namjoon again yet. I wouldn't be able to see Jungkook. I'd broken my promise after all.
