End of Summer, Beginning of Solitude
Part 3I smoothed down the piano keys, dust covering my fingertips. I pressed the keys harder, but I could never make them sound the same as Yoongi did. It'd been two weeks since Yoongi has stopped coming to school. Rumor had it that he was finally expelled.
Hoseok didn't say anything and I didn't ask.On that day, two weeks ago, Yoongi and I were the only ones in this old classroom when the teacher came in. It was open-school day. We'd decided to stay in the storage room. We didn't want to stay seated in our school classrooms.
When the teacher entered, Yoongi didn't even look at him, and instead went on playing the piano. I was lying on two desks I'd put together, my eyes closed.
Something about Yoongi and the piano didn't seem to match, but the two were actually inextricable.
I had no idea how much time had passed. The door burst open when the teacher walked in. The sound was so loud it was as if the teacher had actually broken the door down. The piano stopped.
The teacher slapped me across the face as I tried to back away. Even when I fell down, he kept scolding me and hitting me. I sat hunched up, putting up with the ceaseless stream of abusive words.
All of a sudden the teacher stopped yelling. Yoongi had stepped between us, a hand on the teacher's shoulder. The teacher was dumbfounded as he looked over Yoongi's shoulder at me.
Thinking back to that day Yoongi stood up for me, I pressed down on the keys again, trying to mimic the song I'd heard him play that day the teacher hit me.
Will he really be expelled? Will he ever come back?
Yoongi said he was used to being hit and kicked by teachers. If I weren't there, would he still have stood up for me and stood against that teacher?
If I weren't there, would he still be playing the piano in this room instead of me?
