#48 - Permission

I was a traditional guy. Proposing to Courtney was my priority, but I wanted to do things right. I needed to ask Courtney's dad for permission.

The Miller household was as lively as always, and I spotted Kari's car in the driveway, suggesting she was visiting her parents again. I had told Courtney I was going out with Damien, and he was informed of this so that if she asked he'd cover for me. After knocking on the door several times, Kari opened up, and she was very surprised when she noticed I was alone.

"Shayne, everything alright? Where's Courtney?"

"Courtney's fine. She's at home. May I come in?"

Kari nodded and stepped aside, allowing me to pass through the threshold. I stood there awkwardly as Kari shut the door behind me, and Conr soon greeted me, asking the same questions as his eldest sister. After telling them both Courtney was fine again, I asked if their dad was home.

"Yeah, he's outside, want me to go get him?" Kari asked.

I nodded and thanked her, before sitting in the living room. Conr sat beside me and he cleared his throat.

"I think I know where this is going," he began.

"Yeah?"

He smiled, "Yeah, and I just want to say, I'm so happy that my sister has you. You take such good care of her, and I just wanted to say thank you, Shayne."

I patted his shoulder, "Thank you for being such a good brother to her as well, man."

Conr grinned, and before long, Courtney's dad walked in, accompanied by Courtney's mom and Kari. All of Courtney's other younger siblings were at school.

"Shayne, my boy, how are you?" Mr Miller exclaimed, shaking my hand.

"Good sir, and yourself?"

"Not too bad, not too bad," he said smiling, taking a seat.

Mrs Miller kissed my cheek and gave me a hug, before sitting next to her husband, and Courtney's parents, as well as Conr and Kari, all faced me, with Conr smiling widely, knowing what I was about to say.

"Where's Courtney?" Mrs Miller inquired.

"She's at home."

"You came alone?"

I nodded, "I wanted to ask something."

Mr Miller gestured for me to speak, "Ask away."

I cleared my throat and held their gazes, readying myself, "I wanted to ask for your permission..."

Conr beamed a massive grin, Mrs Miller gasped with teary eyes and Kari covered her mouth with her hands. They all knew what I was about to say, except for Courtney's father.

"Permission to do what, Shayne?"

I smiled, "Permission to ask for your youngest daughter's hand in marriage, sir."

Mrs Miller broke down into loud sobs and Kari hugged her, crying too. Conr patted his dad's shoulder as the two of them suppressed tears as well. Mr Miller stood up and gestured towards me to follow, and so I did.

"Sir?"

Without saying a word, Courtney's father threw his arms around me and pulled me in for a hug, "Take good care of my daughter, Shayne."

I grinned, "I will, I promise."

Soon, Mrs Miller, Kari and Conr all joined in, and I couldn't be happier. Courtney Miller, here I come...
