Arthur woke around 3, maybe earlier than that. A thunderstorm had swept through the area and he was surprised it hadn't woken Lily up.He walked to the window and watched as the sky lit up off in the distance, with a low rumble to follow every so often.
Thunderstorms in California were always so different, unlike the ones out in the middle of the country. They were mellow, but out there, they were quite temperamental. He enjoyed the chaos though; preferred it actually.
He checked on Lily in her makeshift crib at the foot of the bed. She was sleeping soundly, with her blanket draped over her. Arthur rubbed over her cheek with his finger, smiling as she twitched in her sleep.
He still couldn't believe it sometimes. He was a father. It wasn't his first time, but, it was his first time actually being there. And it meant everything to him.
"Is she ok?" Lorna asked.
Arthur turned at the sound of her voice."Yeah." He whispered."She's perfect."
Lorna smiled and patted the bed beside her. He shuffled over and climbed in behind her, draping his arm over her waist.
"Ready for more?" He whispered.
Lorna giggled."When Lily gets a little bit older. I can't handle having two babies at once."
"I want another girl."
"You can't have them all, Arthur."
He smirked.
"I want a little boy, so he can protect his sister."
"Don't worry, I got it covered."
"Well if we have another girl, you'll need backup."
He scoffed."I won't. I'm more than capable."
"I know honey." She brought his hand up to her mouth and pressed a kiss to his palm."I just want to even it out a bit."
Arthur pressed a kiss to her neck and rolled on his back, staring up at the ceiling, listening to the last little bit of the storm.
A boy? That would be like a slap in his face. He would only expect Isaac out of him and that wouldn't be fair. He sighed and rolled over on his side, facing the door. It was stupid of him to even bring it up.
"Pa!"
Arthur smiled as Isaac rushed down the grassy knoll to greet him, his momma smiling as she hung clothes on the line.
He jumped off Boadicea and gathered Isaac into his arms, holding him close to his chest.
"I missed you!"
He chuckled."I missed you too."
"Arthur." Eliza greeted, walking down to them both."It's been a while."
Arthur grabbed her hand and guided her over, pressing a gentle kiss to her lips. She smiled and ruffled Isaac's honey brown hair.
"Yeah, I'm sorry 'bout that, been awful busy."
She nodded."I'm sure of it. Isaac, go feed the chickens for me. I need to talk to your Pa."
"Okay Momma."
Isaac did as he was told, leaving Arthur smiling like a fool. Eliza rubbed Boadicea's neck, making the mare purr. Arthur pulled out a cigarette and struck a match on his boot.
"So what is it you wanna talk about?"
"Oh...I met somebody, Arthur."
He swallowed thickly and looked down, feeling his stomach twist. Of course she found someone, she was beautiful and young and any man would want her. Hell, he wanted her, but she didn't want him.
