NARRATOR'S POV:
~~~~~~~~
Tony stumbles out of the ship, seeing the remaining team outside to meet him. He nearly trips as he thinks about Peter, about the way he disappeared in front of him, in his arms. Steve steadies him, and Tony looks up at the captain with heartbroken eyes. "I lost the kid," he chokes out, struggling not to lose his composure. "We lost, Tony."
Pepper pulls him away, and he holds her to him in the relief that she didn't leave him, too.
But he doesn't know.
Pressing his lips to her cheek, the two of them turn to walk back to the facility. Tony's heart swells just a bit at the fact that he'll see another face. A face that he's missed and needs to see with every ounce of his soul.
But he doesn't know.
Natasha looks up from the ground, her teary eyes meeting his.
And in that instant, he realizes.
And he breaks down.
The tears spill from his eyes as he pulls away and walks towards the agent, holding her gaze. "She can't be..."
She stays silent.
"No. No, no, no. Tell me that she's in there."
Nothing.
"Tell me!"
Natasha shakes her head, trying to hold in sobs as her own tears roll down her face.
"She can't be," he whispers, hoping that if he wills it enough, it'll become true. "She couldn't have."
Natasha shakes her head once more, blinking quickly to contain her emotions.
"She's gone, Tony. We lost her, too."
No.
He stumbles inside, the word continuously repeating in his head. He throws open her door, praying to any god in this universe that she'll be there.
But it's of no use.
He sinks to the floor, burying his face in his hands at the realization.
He didn't just lose Peter.
He lost them both.
