A/N: Y/m/n = your mothers name. credit for plot and unchanged parts of the script go to the creators of one day at a time.

Marius and Y/n are standing at the front door of their home. Y/n was expecting to see her mother there with yet another delicious cake to share. Her face read anxiousness.

"My mother is probably in there. Oh my- what am I going to tell her?!"

Marius takes her hand and kisses the back of it.

"It's okay. I'll be right beside you. And hey, if things go downhill, we can stress eat that cake she probably brought together."

She laughs and brings her empty hand to his cheek.

"You always know how to make me feel better."

"Yeah well, I've been practicing for the last 15 years. I still remember the first time I saw you cry. It broke my heart, and I pledged to make sure you were never ever upset again."

"Alright, don't get sappy."

She begins entering the house, letting go of his hand and cheek.

"Hey, this could have been a very romantic moment!" He says with a hidden smile as he follows after her.

"Bonsoir Mama."

"Oh hello! I brought you another-"

"Chocolate cake!"

Marius interrupts excitedly, licking his lips. He walks towards the cake on the kitchen table, leaving Y/n and her mother at the front entrance.

"Mama, I did something terrible." Y/n says carefully as she places her shawl onto the coat hanger.

"It's okay, I have a shovel." Her mother says quietly, holding her daughter's shoulders.

"Wait, what? Wait, what do you think I did?"

"It doesn't matter, amoure. No one will ever know."

"No... Mama, I quit my job."

"I don't understand. The job ended?"

"No, it didn't end."

"Did your boss die?"

"No."

"Was there a fire? Scandal? Was he a sex offender and they closed down the business because of the shame?"

"No!"

"I have just said all the reasons!" Mrs. L/n exclaims as she slaps her hands down by her sides.

"I quit my job because I found out that mourveux Andreas makes more than I do, and he's only been there one month." (brat is what that means, still french)

"Oh, so you quit because of principles."

Y/n nods.

"Are you crazy?!"

"I know, I know. I did exactly what I told Evan I wasn't going to do. I yelled, I screamed, and it felt great. But now we're all gonna have to live on the streets." She cries, going in to hug her mother.

Marius then enters with a face covered in chocolate cake.

"I'm here for you my love." He says in a muffle, his mouth full of chocolate cake.

Y/n lifts her head from her mother's chest to look at Marius. She looks him up and down, a piece of chocolate cake falls from his face. He didn't looks his strongest at the moment, resulting in Y/n putting her head back onto her mother's shoulder to cry. Somebody knocks on the door.

"It's open!" Mrs. L/n says as she rubs a hand up and down Y/n's back.

Dr. Cassel enters.

"Y/n? Oh, hello, Y/m/n. You look lovely, as always."

"I know. I will let you two talk." She responds, pulling out the hug.

Mrs. L/n grabs her coat and glares at Marius before leaving. Marius furrows his eyebrows and lets his chocolate covered hands fly up saying 'what did I do?' He then leaves the room to clean up.

"What's up?" Y/n asks, smoothing down her dress.

"Y/n, please, come back to work. I'm begging you. I can't run the office without you."

"You're just saying that to be nice." She says shaking her head.

"No, I'm not! I need you."

"...10 francs more an hour. That guy."

"Well, he's a good nurse but it wasn't right. Wasn't right... But in my defense he did ask for more than you did, and I have a lot of trouble saying no. That's why Jane works with us."

Y/n's eyebrows rise. "That mystery's solved. To be honest, I don't know if it's a woman thing or what. I didn't even think about negotiating. I mean, I had just quit my job as a waitress. I really needed a job. You said, "Do you want one?" I said, "Yes.""

"And you see, he made me feel that somehow I was lucky to have him. But I'm sorry, and it was nothing personal. You deserve more. How about this? How about this? What if I give you a raise, and you make the same amount as Andreas?"

She crosses her arms and puckers her lips to the left in thought.

"Plus a franc more an hour."

"Done." He responds almost instantly.

"Two francs more an hour and Andreas starts pulling his weight?"

"Done." He says with a crack in his voice.

"Which he's never gonna do, so let's make it three francs an hour."

"Done! Please?"

"Okay. Okay. That was fun. And I have to admit, Andreas is not a terrible nurse. He's good with the patients, you know? He's got a charm that I do not understand."

"Well, he's got that manly thing going on. I think that's what seduced me. You know, all the nicknames and the fist bumps I guess I got caught up in the bromance."

"I get it... No, I don't get it at all. But I get it."

"So, are we good?"

She smiles and nods.

"Yes."

Dr. Cassel holds his fist out.

"Boom?"

"Yeah, I don't do that. I do this."

Y/n opens her arms and hugs Dr. Cassel.

Marius is watching from the kitchen, his face now clear of cake. After a moment, he comes into the room and clears his throat.

"Please let go of my wife."

"S-sorry. I'll see you tomorrow?"

Y/n nods. He smiles and then leaves. Once the door closes, Y/n squeals and runs to Marius, jumping into his arms. He laughs and spins her around in the air. She digs her head into his neck.

"I ate all of your mother's cake."

She pulls out of his neck and stares at his guilty face. Her face is serious for a second before turning into a chuckle and pulling him in for a kiss.
