8. Drive

When I wake up, corpse is awake next to me, scrolling through his phone.

'Mornin' I mumble. He looks at me and smiles 'good morning.' He says. I still feel tired. 'Your phone rang earlier, but I didn't want to wake you.' He says. 'Do you know who it was?' I ask. 'Your sister.' He says. I roll over and grab my phone, seeing that I have a missed call from her. I sit up and sigh. I dial her number and wait for her to pick up.

'Hey.'
'Hi, sorry I missed ya.'
'No worries.'
'So what's going on? Everything okay?'
'Yeah, everything's fine over here. Just wanted to ask if you're still on that break.'
'Oh I am! Have to start again next Wednesday.'
'Nice, so you got some free time?'
'Yeah.'
'Well I wanted to ask if you'd like to stay over this weekend. I know it's very last moment but you're not staying at your apartment anyways right?'
'Right.'
'So how about it? Tyler misses you. Micheal keeps whining too and we do need to catch up.'
'Yeah, your right. Is it okay if I take Leo with me? I have someone for pebbles.'
'Pebbles staying at mom's?'
'No a close friend of mine.'
'Ah alright. So what about it? You coming?'
'Sure. Sure. I'll text you about when I'll come.'
'Okay! Cant wait.'
'Alright. Bye sis.'
'Bye bye.'

I hang up and look at the phone in my hand. 'So you're leaving?' I look up, startled by corpse. 'Oh, yeah. My sister asked me to stay over for the weekend.' I say. He nods and looks away. 'I'll leave tomorrow morning if that's okay, or if you want I can go tonight.' He looks up 'no, no, you can stay and leave tomorrow morning.' He says. I smile softly 'thanks.'

The rest of the day I started looking for apartments around the area while corpse is out for a appointment. He didn't really want to tell me what kind of appointment though. I got some groceries and I cooked. After dinner he goes to stream and I watch some tv while falling asleep on the couch till corpse tells me to go to bed.

I climb in and snuggle under the covers. 'Will you take Leo with you?' He asks. 'Yeah, maybe I can drop him off, so he can stay there till I can live on my own again.' I say. 'Okay.' He says. 'Is it okay if pebbles stays here, I can take her too if you want.' He shakes his head 'no need, it's nice to have her around.' I smile 'okay.'

Next morning I wake up alone with pebbles. I can hear corpse talking in the living room. I get up and walk out to find him on the phone 'I understand......' he quickly looks up at me before looking away again. 'I'll fix it........ yes.' He looks troubled. 'Okay, tomorrow at ten.' He says with a nod. 'Okay, thank you. Have a good day.' He says before laying the phone down and ending the call. 'Morning.' I say. 'Hey.' He says as he turns to me. I open my arms, wanting a hug but not knowing if that's okay. He chuckles and steps closer, letting me hug him. He wraps one arm around me in return. He holds the other at his side. 'Everything okay?' I ask as I pull away. 'Nothing for you to worry about.' He says, making me look up at him. He smiles softly to reassure me. 'Okay....' I say still suspicious. 'I'm heading back to bed, do as you please.' He says as he starts on his way. Back to bed? The man barely sleeps as it is. Somethings wrong. I sigh as he closes the bedroom door behind himself. I'm supposed to go to Eve today and stay for the weekend.

I take a shower and change into clean clothes. After that I grab my things and head to the bedroom to say bye.

I knock softly. 'Yeah.' He answers from inside. I open the door a little and see him laying under the covers with pebbles purring next to him. 'I'm going to go to my sister.' I say. He sits up 'will you come here when you come back?' He asks. 'Are you sure that's okay?' I ask. 'Yes. Please come here.' He says. 'Okay. I will. I may be staying two nights so I'll be back Monday.' I say. 'Alright. Have fun.' He says. 'Thank you. Call me if somethings wrong.' I say. 'You too.' He says back. I nod and step back, wanting to close the door 'Hey hold up.' He says before I closed it completely. I open it again to see that he's holding his hand out for me. 'No goodbye hug?' He asks. I smile as my face heats up a little and walk over. Again he hugs me with one arm. 'Promise you'll try to tell me if somethings wrong?' I ask. 'I will try. I promise.' He says.

I'm on my way with Leo.

A four hour drive.

When completely in the middle of nowhere I see my sisters house. I park my car at the side of the dirt road. I get out and let Leo out as well. 'Aunt Amy!' I smile at turn at the high voice. 'Hey Tyler.' I say as I kneel down to hug him. 'How have you been big man?' I ask my five year old nephew. 'Good! I learned how to ride a bike!' He says happily as I pick him up. 'Really? That's good of you.' I compliment as I see my sister and Her boyfriend walk out. I put Tyler down and walk up to them with a smile. Leo is happily tapping his paw in front of Eve. 'Hey guys.' I say. The both hug me 'hey sis.' Eve says with a smile. 'Good to see you again.' Micheal says. 'You too.' I say.

We head inside and I quickly take out my phone to text corpse.

You: hey, I arrived. How are you feeling?

I sit down at the table with the part of the family I still see. 'Dad went to the hospital last week. Stayed there for four days. They thought he was about to have a heart attack.' Eve says. 'His problem.' I mumble. 'He kind of said it like it was my fault.' Eve adds. 'Of course He did.' I scoff. 'Why are you even going there?' I ask her. 'You know what it's like. I just feel pity.' She says. 'You have a lot of different things that are worth your time.' I tell her. 'I know.' She says.

She sets down a cup of tea 'thanks.' She sits down across from me 'How are things? I heard about you leaving the apartment, what happened?' She asks. 'Some guy kept trying to get to me. He at one point broke in.' I say. 'What?!' I hold my hands up as she shoots up 'calm down.' I say. She sits back down. 'What happened? Are you okay? Where are you staying now?' She asks quickly. 'Well he broke in like I said. I'm fine, and I'm staying at a friend.' I say. 'What friend?' She asks. I tell her about Corpse and how I met him. She nods approvingly. 'But I'm trying to sell my apartment and I'm looking for a different one, hoping to get one closer to work.' I say.

Eve's expression saddens at the mention of work.

'How have you been after everything?' She asks. 'I healed well. Just have some nightmares of it every once in a while.' I say. 'Please tell me that's the last time you went there as shooter.' I nod. 'Just as nurse from now on. I've seen enough.' I say. 'Thank god.' She says as she rubs her head. 'It's good that they gave you time off.' Micheal says. 'Yeah.' I say. 'Are you up to go back after two weeks?' Eve asks 'Yeah, I'm doing fine.' I tell her.

In the evening we sit around the fire pit. I didn't get a message back from corpse. Maybe for the better, it could mean he's asleep. Eve told me it's okay to leave Leo with her until I find a better place to live. Though I'll mis him.

I lay in the guest bedroom, staring up at the ceiling. My mind wonders to going back to work. It may be for the best. A bit of distraction from what happened last deployment may be for the better.

The next day starts and I'm watching Tyler ride his bike in the early morning.
My phone buzzes multiple times in my pocket, so I take it out.

Corpse

I quickly pick up. 'Hey, everything okay?'
'Amelia....' I can't understand what he's saying as he breathes heavily.
'What's wrong?'
'I can't move my arm.'

Confused by what he's saying I look around myself. I can't do anything from here and
it's a four hour drive back.

'I can't fucking move it and I couldn't see for most of yesterday evening.'
'Hey, please take a deep breath.'
'Am I going to die? What if what the doctor said is true? I don't want to die.'
'Please try to stay calm. I'm right here.'

I make my way inside.

'I don't know what is wrong with me.'

He sounds on the verge of tears.

'Talk to me corpse. Can you not feel anything in your arm or can you not move it.'
'I-I... I can feel when I touch it. Though my muscles don't seem to react.'
'Okay. Keep trying for me. I'm going to head your way.'
'Okay, okay.'

He takes a deep breath as I walk into the kitchen where both Micheal and Eve are. 'I'm heading back. He's not doing good.' I say softly. Eve looks concerned and nods.

'I'm grabbing my bag now. It's a long drive but I'll be there before two.'
'Thank you.'
'You're welcome. Will you be okay if I hang up?'
'Yes.'
'Okay. I'll be there alright, hang in there.'

I say bye to everyone quickly and head on my way.
I wish the drive would have been shorter.
