I head back home, tired and a little annoyed.
When I step inside the apartment I hear multiple voices. 'I know, I'm sorry but I really tried.' Corpse says. 'Yeah.... well I'm glad you at least came when mom got sick.' A girls voice says.
I close the door a bit loud to announce that I'm home. 'Is that Amy?' I hear the woman ask. 'Hey calm down.' Corpse says. I walk further into the house, taking my beret off and stuffing into one of the large pockets on the side of my leg. 'Hey.' Corpse says as he's the first to turn around the corner. 'Hi.' I say with a sigh. A girl, with hair like corpse and the same eyes trails behind him. 'Hey, you must be the sister.' I say with a smile. 'Yeah! I'm Selene.' She says as she shakes my hand. 'Nice to meet you!' I say back. From what I've seen so far, she's less shy and less calm and introverted. They're kind of like opposites, which I didn't expect. 'How was your day?' Corpse asks. 'It sucked, but that's fine.' I say. 'Did he give you something to drink?' I ask. 'No, not yet. I just arrived.' She says. 'Oh really? Was it a long drive?' She nods and sits at the dinner table with corpse. 'Yeah, about three hours.' I raise my eyebrows 'oh I expected it to be less.' I say. 'Yeah, most people do.' She says back. 'Then you must want something to drink, right?' I ask. 'Ah, yes that would be nice.' She says with a bright smile. 'What would you like? Coffee, tea, soda?' She thinks for a second. 'Tea would be nice.' She says. 'Alright, coming up. And you?' I ask as I turn to corpse. 'Just some water will do.' He says.
I smile and head to the kitchen.
I turn on the kettle as I get myself a quick glass of water. I down it in one go before taking a pain killer. The floor creaks as someone walks up. Two big arms warp around me. I let out a breath and lean back into him. 'What happened?' He asks. 'I got pissed at some higher ups last deployment, and now they're trying to get me kicked out.' I say. 'Damn. What did you do while you were pissed?' He asks. 'I put them in their place. They can't go around risking life's of my men.' I say. He places his hand over the now healed gunshot wound 'or yours.' He says. His warmth and scent is calming. 'It was just really tiring.' I say. He kisses the back of my neck 'well you're home now, go change, I'll fix the drinks.' He says. I turn around and hug him. 'Thank you.'
I walk out of the kitchen 'I'm going to wash up real quick, corpse will get your tea.' I say to Selene. 'Oh yea, no problem!' I make my way up and take a quick shower before changing into back jeans and a sweater. When I head back down they seem to be talking about something serious, but both smile when I sit down.
'I made you some tea.' He says as he nods at the cup in front of me. 'Thank you.' I say with a tired smile. 'So you're in the army, huh?' Selene asks. 'Yeah.' I say with a smile as I wrap my hands around the warm cup. 'How long have you worked there?' She asks. 'Well I joined as a recruit when I was 17. I finished college and joined for a full time job when I was nineteen, so officially three years, but total of five.' I say. 'Damn, you joined when you were seventeen.' I nod with a chuckle 'I got impatient, I should have waited I'll I graduated college.' Selene laughs. 'Not one for waiting and taking it easy then.' I shake my head with a chuckle. 'What do you do?' I ask. 'I'm a veterinarian.' She says. 'Really? That's so cool. What is that like?' She tells me about her job, her age, where she went to college. She's very different from corpse. He calmly sits at the table with us as he listens in on the stories we share.
'I met my boyfriend there too.' She says. 'Oh you have a boyfriend! Tell me more.' I say. She chuckles 'for a soldier You're really adorable.' She says. I laugh 'oh just wait.' I say. 'Well, what do you want to know?' She asks. 'Do you have a picture?' She laughs at my question. 'My god.' She pulls out her phone and scrolls through it before showing me a cute picture of her and her boyfriend. 'Ahw you two look nice together.' I say.
After a bit I start on dinner. It takes a lot of work and a long time, so corpse and his sister watch a movie. After a bit he comes in to fill up their glasses. 'How is it going?' He asks as he peeks over my shoulder. 'It's good, nearly done.' He takes the spoon out of the pan and scoops up some food to taste. He hums as he chews. 'Good?' I ask. He nods. 'Are you guys having fun?' I ask. 'Yeah, why?' I turn to him and hug him 'it looks like you two are having upsetting conversations every time you two are alone together.' I say. 'There's a lot of catching up, and a lot of explaining.' He says. I pull back a little 'you rarely ever see her, have some fun.' I say. He lets out a breath and smiles softly. 'Alright.' I smile and kiss him.
He sets the table and I bring the food. We eat together.
Selene laughs as he fast corpse is eating. 'Jesus. I haven't seen you eat like that since mom cooked.' She says. He looks up, chewing as he does. 'Is she cooking again?' He asks after he swallowed it. She shakes her head with a sad smile 'no. I still remember what she used to make though.' She says. 'The meat and cheese thing?' Corpse asks. She chuckles 'yeah.' I smile as they bring up their old memories. When in bed, corpse has his head in the crook of my neck, holding me tightly. He seems happier then he did earlier the evening. I play with his hair as I gently trace his back with the other hand. His breathing slows down to a calm and steady pattern, letting me know he's asleep.
He needed this.
