I wake up and get ready for work. It's been a while. I pull my uniform out of one of the boxes and get dressed. I grab my beret and make my way out the door.
I arrive at the military base and park my car. I put my beret on and get out of the car. When I walk in through the main entrance my former lieutenant looks up from what he's doing at the counter. 'Lieutenant Harris.' He says as he stands up straight. 'Sir.' I say with a nod and smile. 'Heard what happened. How are you doing?' He asks. 'I'm fine. Healed up and everything.' I say. 'You're back two weeks early.' He says. 'If it weren't for the medical notation, I would have been back straight after.' I say. He chuckles 'that's the soldier I remember alright. I have some new recruits for you. New team, mixed functions. You and Marksen will train the two newest groups.' He says. He walks me down the hall when Marksen is waiting. 'Lieutenant.' He says with a nod. 'Sargent.' I say. I can't hold back my laugh. 'Asshole, that's how you treat me when I get back.' I say as I smack his arm, falling in step behind the Lieutenant. 'The two groups will be arriving here.' He says as he opens the double doors that lead to the field behind the building.
He hands each of us a folder with a list of names and personal information about the new recruits. 'You know the drill. Make it work.' The general says as he turns to walk away. Me and Marksen salute before I get slapped on the back 'the fuck did you do, getting shot.' He says. I slap his hand away 'I wore a sign saying shoot here what else?' I say sarcastically. 'Yeah of course, my bad.' He says with a laugh. 'How were things here?' I ask. 'Calm. Couple of guys got kicked out. Besides that it was boring. I only gave trainings.' He says. 'Ahw, how sad.' I say. 'Fucker.' He says. 'Ey, don't forget that I'm you superior.' I tell him with a grin. 'Yes asshole!' He says with a weird salute.
After a day of work I get home. I shower and head to bed. In bed I look at where corpse laid two nights ago.
"Or ask him to live with you."
I groan. I can't just do that. Why did Eve say it like it's nothing. I shiver at the cold. I got used to having him there. It's a little weird now. Pebbles is not in bed either, probably missing his scent.
After a long time awake I finally fall asleep. The next day goes by fast. I get home a bit earlier and need to cook dinner. I eat on the couch as I watch some videos online on my laptop. Again the night is cold and I miss corpse. I pat my face 'get over it.' I tell myself. I look at the empty space and roll over, face in my pillow as I groan loudly. I look at my phone for the time, seeing it's two. I went to bed at eleven. I give up and get out of bed. It's weekend anyways. I throw on some sweatpants and head out. I drive for a bit till I park my car and get out.
I walk inside and get inside the elevator, going up to the second floor. When there I walk up to the door and knock. It takes a while but there's no answer. I knock again. Now the door unlocks and opens a little. 'Amelia?' He opens the door further and lowers his mask. 'What are you-' I hug him. After a second he hugs me back. 'I missed you too much to sleep.' I mumble into his shoulder. He pulls back, making me step inside, and closes the door. When he turns back he hugs me 'I missed you too.' He says. I hum as I hold him tightly, enjoying his warmth. 'I don't want to sleep alone.' I say. He pulls back and places his one hand on my cheek. 'Stay tonight.' I smile softly and place my hand over his. He leans down and kisses me quickly before hugging me again. 'Corpse?' I say. He hums in response. 'I think I....' I take a breath, trying to calm by pounding heart. 'I think I really.....' my face is on fire as my heartbeat speeds up even more. "What could go wrong?" Eve's words repeat in my head. I pull back a little, but can't get myself to look him in the eye 'I think I-' he gently grabs my chin, placing his forehead against mine
'I love you, Amelia.'
My eyes widen as I look at him. He blushes and looks away. 'You...... I love you too!' I say and hug him again. 'I really do.' He leads me to the bed and gets in. I do the same and face him. 'The hospital called.' He says. I scoot closer and grab his arm. 'What did they say?' I ask. 'They told me about the MRI results.' He says. I move my hand down to hold his hand and intertwine our fingers. 'And?' I ask nervously. 'No brain tumor.' He says. I smile and move up, looking down at him. His expression is unreadable. 'I'm happy for you. Must be a weight off of your shoulder.' I say. 'In a way. Though the bills are getting expensive and even if it's not a tumor, what is it then?' He says. 'I kiss his cheek before looking at him again 'not a tumor.' I say. He let's out a breathy laugh 'I guess you're right.' He says. I nod. He pulls me down, having me lay on him now. I hear his heartbeat like this. 'Thank you for coming.' He said. 'Why?' He chuckles to himself.
'Because I didn't have the guts to.'
