narrative
"do you know what to do?" y/n asks her eleven year old son. "no.. i mean i've seen it in movies but i don't know.."vinnie urges y/n to continue, she can tell their son. "if a cop was to EVER pull you or somebody over and you're in the car, put your hands out so they can see you're not grabbing or trying to look for something. if you're in the front, put your hands up or put them on the dashboard." y/n tells the child.
"but- why? i'm not doing anything wrong." y/n sighs trying to come up with the right words.
"you know your mixed right? most people wouldn't care and just see you as black and because of that you're seen as a target to certain people. i can't tell you why because in all honesty, it's just because of your skin color. just, please always remember this talk isiah."
"okay." the boy sighs. he understands everything, this isn't the first time his parents talked to him about what to do as a black person in today's society. he's just slightly confused as to why people could hate somebody based on their skin color.
it doesn't sit right with him. he notices how his mother tenses up when cops walk or drive by them. he hates the fact he could lose his mom one day due to racism wether it's police brutality or just pure racism from a person.
"you ready to go to the mall?" y/n asks isiah who zoned out. "mhm." "i'll see you later." the woman quickly kisses vinnie, vinnie saying a quick 'stay safe'.

(play song)
"thanks for today ma." the mother and son walk out the mall, isiah happy because y/n spoiled him for having good grades. "you deserve it." she grabs the bags out his hands, placing them in the trunk.
as y/n drives home, she notices a cop car following her, it's been following her since they left the mall. "you okay mom?" isiah asks the mother who glances at her rear view mirror every few minutes.
"yeah." the sirens behind her go off, the red and blue lights shining. "PLEASE PULL OVER!" is heard from the microphone making y/n pull over.
"what happened? you weren't speeding." the boy confused once again. "i don't know either babe. it's nothing." y/n gives her son a reassuring smile knowing deep down she's kind of scared.
y/n's pov
"ma'm, do you know why i pulled you over?" the officer questions. "nope. i was following the speed limit." i shrug. i watch as he looks in my car trying to look for something."with all due respect, why am i getting pulled over? i have to get home, i just want to know why you stopped me?"
"you mind if i take a look in your trunk?" "sir, this has nothing to do with me getting pulled over. why do you need to search my trunk?"
"i got a complaint that somebody shoplifted recently at the mall." his hands resting on his belt. "i don't know what that has to do with me?" i raise an eyebrow knowing where this is going.
i knew where this was going from the start. i take a quick look at isiah whos fiddling with his fingers indicating he's nervous. "license and registration ma'm."
i reach over to the glove compartment, stopping once i hear isiah. "are we gonna die mom? i'm scared." he whispers. "hey, isiah, we are not dying babe. i promise." i plant a kiss on his forehead as i grab my wallet.
"here you go officer." i hand it over. he walks to his car to scan it through. "i'm scared mom." my son teary eyed. "it's okay. i won't let anything bad happen to you. if anything happens record, okay?" i hand him my phone earning a hesitant nod.
"mrs.hacker, please exit the vehicle." i face the officer confused. "why? sir you haven't given me a good reason as to why you pulled me over. is it because of my skin color? why am i a suspect when there's hundreds of other people at the mall?" my voice remaining calm.
"i need you to step out the car. this is resisting, please exit the car. now." i look over at isiah, eyeing the phone in his hand. i step out my car, the caucasian officer automatically pinning me to the car.
"do you have any weapons on you?" he questions. "you're recording?" i mouth, isiah nodding. "i asked you a question." my body forcefully pushed into my car door making me wince. "no."
"alright, you're under arrest for stealing and resisting. you have the right to remain silent and anything you say or do will be used against you in court." i close my eyes not wanting to scare isiah. however, it's too late.
"MA PLEASE DON'T LEAVE ME!" "PUT THE WEAPON DOWN NOW!" the officer now pointing a gun at my son. "STOP! IT'S A PHONE. HE'S ONLY ELEVEN!" i yell as my son sobs uncontrollably.
"PUT. IT. DOWN." the white officer repeats. isiah drops the phone putting his hands on the dashboard. "i need back up." he says into his mic. i attempt to look at his badge number and remember it. 309.
police station
"i'm sorry y/n." vinnie wraps his arms around me once i get out of questioning for the past two hours. "it's okay. i just need to go home and start filing to sue." i smile weakly.
home
"you're here. i'm sorry mom. i'm so so sorry." isiah cries once i enter the house. "you did perfect. i'm proud of you. i just have to do a few things right now." i hug my son tightly knowing this affected him badly.
i walk over to my laptop and start filing to sue. hard work payed of as a lawyer.
3 weeks later
( court date )"as you can see, i payed for everything myself. the video, recorded by my son shows what really happened. i personally believe i was racially profiled because of my skin color. this should never be tolerated from somebody with such authority. i genuinely think he should be fired and the police station should be sued for even letting a man like this work for them." i finish my statement to the judge.
"i see mrs.hacker and i'm sorry that happened. i agree with you. you're request will be granted. i'm sorry that happened and i assure you it won't happen to you or anybody else. officer david, you will be turning your badge in to your captain." he slams his gavel.
i sigh thankfully and walk out the room after the racist officer. "i'm sorry. i didn't know you were a lawyer." officer david gives a half ass apology as we exit the court room.
"doesn't matter wether i'm a lawyer or not. it should never be okay to think so lowly or treat somebody that way because of their skin color." i turn around on my heels, one of my hands holding vinnie's , the other holding isiah's.
