"mom... can i change my skin color?" i hear my daughter say behind me. i look at vinnie, both of us confused. "huh? why baby?" i ask her while placing her on my lap.she looked at me before crying. "because.. people a-at school made fu-fun of me. they sai-said that i-i-i would never get married because i'm black. they said tha-that i would never make friends because i'm black. i also had nothing to eat because they threw away my food and and- they told my teacher that i was eating chocolate when it wasn't. this girl also pulls my-my hair during sleep time." layla cries.
i feel my blood boil but i know i can't show my daughter right now. "is that all lay? i ask. she shakes her head no and runs upstairs. i sigh and feel vinnie sit next to me. he knows how i feel because growing up biracial wasn't easy for me either and i never want our daughter to go through it.
"they also did this" layla says behind us. we both look back and my mouth drops. "lay, is this why your hair was down?" i ask while standing up. "yeah.."
i grab the ponytail of hair in her hand and put in a ziplock bag. "vin can you please put layla in her car seat, we're going to her school" i tell vinnie. he nods his head and picks up layla, walking outside.
"mom, dad, are you guys mad at me?" our daughter asks. "no babe, mommy and i are not mad at you whatsoever. but how long has this been going on for?" vinnie tells our daughter.
i look into the mirror and see her crying. i put my arm behind me and rub her leg. "the whole school year." she confesses. both vinnie and i in complete shock.
as we arrive to her school i see layla asleep. "you go, i'll wake her up" vinnie smiles as he pecks my lip. i walk into the school to be greeted my parents and administrators.
i make my way into the office to be met with the desk lady. "hello mrs. hacker. what can i do for you?" "i need to talk to the principle now and my daughters teacher." i answer her question bluntly.
"oh you need an appointment to do that." she says. "i don't think talking about being racist and running a racist ass school with racist children need an appointment." i say, my voice rising.
"oh uhm okay... she'll be out in 5 minutes." she says startled. i sit down in the chairs and see vinnie and layla walk in. about 5 minutes later i see the principle walking towards us.
"hi mr and mrs.hacker" she greets, shaking both our hands. she leads us into her office and we sit down, layla on my lap. "how can i help you guys?" she asks.
"well, mrs. smith. my daughter has been getting bullied for the past 6 months by students in her class. they tell her she can't get married or have any friends because she's black. oh, and some child has been pulling her hair while nap time." i tell the principle.
"uhm, mrs.hacker, i'm not saying this couldn't happen but are you sure layla isn't just saying that because she's acting out? there has to be a reason." she says. i look over and see vinnie is also getting mad.
"excuse me? my child isn't acting out, there's nothing for her to be acting out about. and how dare you sit here and try to justify it. my child would never lie about something as serious like this. don't believe me? here is the hair they cut out of MY CHILD'S HEAD TODAY." i bring out the ziplock bag and put it on the desk.
"oh uhm. what are the words they said?" she asks. "layla wanna say it?" vinnie pats layla's back. she nods her head and begins to speak.
"well sophia, she always pulls my hair and she cut it off today. then amy and ava always tell me that i won't get married because i'm black and uhm the class always laugh at me. they tell me this during lunch. then uhm uhm today they told my teacher that i was eating chocolate but it was cheese... so she threw away my food." she says all the way through without crying.
i look at vinnie and we both smile at how our daughter just spoke. "okay, well i'll call in her teacher right now." the principle says. i roll my eyes at how she doesn't seem to really care.
the teacher walks in and his jaw drops. he knows what happens during his class. "well, hello mrs. hacker." he tries to shake my head but i just smile.
"so, mr.hawkins, layla says that ava, amy, sophia, and the rest of your class have been bullying and saying racist things towards her." the principle informs the teacher.
"well, i'm not so sure. i've just been eating my lunch and let the kids do anything. talk among each other and what not." he says. "hmm? so are you sure layla isn't lying or something." the principle asks once again.
"nobody said anything about lunch? she asked you a basic question. so you KNOW what they say to my daughter. because where did lunch come from? you know they tell my daughter these things and yet you don't stop it." vinnie says, ignoring the principle's comment.
he sits there dumbfounded and tries to speak before i cut him off. "NO SHUT IT. TAKE MY DAUGHTER OUT YOUR DAMN SYSTEM. MY DAUGHTER DOESN'T NEED TO BE IN THIS TYPE OF ENVIRONMENT. IF YOU ACCEPT RACISM IN HERE, WE'LL LEAVE." i yell, standing up along with vinnie and layla.
"but mrs. hacker, you still need to pay the $700 for this month... and this school has a great education." mrs. smith tries to reason.
"FUCK THIS SCHOOL. GREAT EDUCATION MY ASS. OBVIOUSLY NOT ENOUGH TO EDUCATE FIVE YEAR OLDS ABOUT RACISM. AND HERE TAKE THE 700" i say while throwing $700 on the table.
with that, we walk out. many people staring at us. before we walk out i'm met with amy, ava, and sophia moms. "you know that type of language is unacceptable in such a young environment mrs.hacker." amy's mom says. the other parent nodding their heads.
"bitch please, kiss my fucking ass. but, teaching your children how to be racist is acceptable? i'm black, what'd your expect. we're naturally loud right?" i mock. they all get quiet and look away. "oh okay.. get the fuck out my face." i push them out my way.
"mom... you're a badass" layla says as i buckle her up. both vinnie and i laughing. "isn't she lay?" vinnie agrees. "layla don't say that. but thank you baby. we're going to put you in a different school unless you want to be homeschooled." i tell her.
"no, i want to go to a different school so i can cuss at other people." she says happily. i shake my head as vinnie laughs. "lay, please don't actaully go to your new school and cuss." vinnie says. "i'm jokinggg." she replies.
"your daughter has a smart mouth to be 5." i tell vinnie. "she gets it from you." he shrugs.
