AS THE DAYS WENT ON, HIMARI became accustomed to getting less than three hours of sleep each night. She frequently watched the sunrises from her tiny closet of a room beside Captain Levi - who was awake just as much as she was. She'd spent the morning sitting on the windowsill, watching the horizon for any sign of her friends.
She and Eren had overheard Eld and Gunther the day before, talking about a mandatory ODM gear check after Hange's titans had been killed. Originally, Himari hadn't thought much of it, until the pair asked about whether or not they knew if any of their friends would be joining the scouts. She'd realised with a start that the next evening, they would be choosing which regiment they were joining.
Captain Levi knocked on her door just as she'd finished pulling on her uniform jacket, allowing her to open it with a muffled yawn behind her hand. The Captain was waiting with his arms folded over his chest and had to crane his neck to look up at the tall girl when she stood in front of him, rubbing the remnants of whatever little sleep she'd managed to get, out of her eyes.
Just as the day before, the day before that and the one before the last, Himari and Eren continued their training with the Levi Squad. They were doing their best to knock the formations and colour-coded signals into the rookies' heads before the upcoming expedition, which was merely two weeks away.
Eren noticed that Himari was rather quiet that morning during their training with Captain Levi. Her eyes would often go glassy and unfocused, as though she were thinking about something else. More than once Levi had to smack her on the back of the head to get her to pay attention, to which she simply sneered at him and rubbed the back of her head.
He often found himself wondering what it was that Himari was thinking about. She'd been rather odd ever since Trost - particularly jumpier than normal. He noted that she seemed much more tired, as though she were getting even less sleep than she already was. He never really had the chance to ask her what it was she often found herself thinking about, considering they hadn't had much of a chance to talk properly since the first few days they'd arrived at the castle.
With each day that grew closer to the expedition, the more urgent Petra, Oluo, Gunther and Eld seemed to ensure that Eren and Himari knew everything that they absolutely needed to know. The seriousness that often overtook their faces during those lessons made Himari nervous. Despite the fact that she was on a squad with the most capable people in the entire Survey Corps, she knew all to well just how quickly things could go to shit, just when everything seemed to be going okay.
"Our Special Ops Squad will be positioned here on standby," Gunther explained, pointing at the different markings of the map that Himari had seen her sister drawing on, the night she and Hange had arrived at headquarters. "We'll be behind the centre rank."
