{more college au stuff. Also, costa vida is a Mexican restaurant from Utah, sorry some people might not be familiar with it.} 3rd person POV
Leorio stood at the front of the line, waiting to be greeted by a worker. He considered his options, debating within himself if he should branch out from his usual.
"Welcome to Costa Vida," A familiar voice said. "What can I make for you today?"
"K-Kurapika?"
The short blond had his hair over his eyes, trying not to look at him. "Hi."
"I had no idea you worked here of all places!" Leorio laughed. "Hey, come on, don't act like a stranger! Is that any way to treat your roommate?" He joked.
"What can I make for you today?" Kurapika repeated awkwardly, still avoiding eye contact.
"I see how it is." Leorio shrugged. "Can I get two sweet pork enchiladas with medium sauce on the inside and smothered with queso?"
Kurapika nodded. Just as he began to prepare Leorio's food, one of his coworkers side stepped into the conversation.
"Hey hey, kooRahPeek, is this guy bothering you?" He laughed, nudging Kurapika.
The short blond finally made eye contact with Leorio, sending a silent plea.
"Oh, you're Jason, right?" Leorio said, reading his tag. "Kurapika's told me a lot About you."
Jason looked over in confusion. "He has? All good things I hope!"
Leorio glanced at Kurapika who widened his eyes and pressed his lips into a thin line.
"More or less." Leorio said.
"Would you like rice and beans on the side?" Kurapika asked, putting the plate of food through the toaster.
"Yes please, black beans."
Leorio stepped down the line, making room for anyone else that might enter the store. He didn't like how close Jason was standing to Kurapika. The way he seemed to hover over his shoulder.
Kurapika took the food out of the toaster, and began to ladle in rice and beans. "Is lettuce and pico okay on the side?"
Leorio nodded. "And a small ranch as well. Thanks, sunshine."
Kurapika nodded and slid the plate down the line, and Jason rang up the order.
"Alrighty, that'll be $7.80." Jason informed while Leorio swiped his card. "So, how do you and Kurapika know each other?" He handed him the receipt.
"Oh, he hasn't told you?" Leorio smiled while signing his name with a blue pen.
Jason shrugged.
Leorio stood tall and handed the receipt back with a smile. "He's my boyfriend."
Jason's face went slack, and Leorio left with a jolly farewell. He was practically glowing with pride while he found a table to sit at.
A few moments later, Kurapika appeared in front of him, hands on his hips and a rag in his hands.
"What did you do?" He demanded.
Leorio shrugged. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"You told Jason that you're my boyfriend?"
"Technically, I told him that you are my boyfriend. Yes." Leorio took another bite.
"Leorio, why would you do that?"
"I didn't like the way he was looking at you, it was... predatory." He admitted. "I wanted to make sure that he would leave you alone."
"Oh." Kurapika slowly sat down across the table. "But you know I'm perfectly capable of doing it myself."
"Has he ever stopped when you've rejected him?" Leorio took another bite. "Has he backed off when you've said no?"
Kurapika looked away. "No."
"Exactly." Leorio reached across the table and poked his forehead. "Sometimes you need a third party to step in, no matter how strong you are."
"Thanks Leorio."
"Of course." Leorio sat back, and caught a glimpse of Jason staring at them from the line. "Oh no. He's watching."
"He probably wants to make sure we're not faking it or something." Kurapika grumbled.
"Kiss me." Leorio said suddenly.
"What?"
"Look, I don't like it any more than you do. But if he's gonna buy this whole fake boyfriend thing, we have to sell it." He said. "So kiss me. On the cheek, at least."
Kurapika sat there in shock, trying to decide.
"Hurry up, sunshine." Leorio whispered. "We have to do it while we have his attention."
Kurapika stood, wearing a forced smile. "Okay. I'll see you after work... honey." He leaned down and gave Leorio a quick peck on the cheek, then turned to leave.
"Love you, babe. Have a good day at work!"
Kurapika was blushing but he kept his cool. He wiped down tables on the way back to his post, twisting the rag nervously in his hands.
Jason didn't bring it up. After that, he hardly spoke to Kurapika again. That was fine- in fact, it was a relief.
